Kathryn's Story

In the community where I have spent all my life, the Bronx, most would say it is a dangerous place. That is because it is meant for people to fail. Liquor stores open twenty-four hours, gangs owning every block, and any narcotic you want is on every corner. As I walk these streets night and day I realize how much I want a better life for my family. Seeing people suffer and in pain pushes me to work harder. There are examples of what not to be all around me, so there is no excuse for failure. Already this world has taught me that if you want to be successful you are going to have to work twice as hard to obtain it.

When I was younger my mother worked in a mortuary. This sparked my interest in wanting to perform autopsies. The human anatomy has been fascinating to me, my mother taught me how to perform dissections on animals. John Hopkins has an excellent medical program and medical school. I am thinking about applying to that college in my senior year. A summer at an actual college campus will give me an idea of what college life entails. This program will also help me strengthen my skill-set academically and challenge me as a student.

What sets the Discover Hopkins program apart from other programs is that John Hopkins is a world- class university. I know that even though it is only a two – week program there is so much I can learn. I like that there is an emphasis on a variety of subjects with different perspectives. There are classes in the social sciences and technology. Since I am also interested in becoming a criminal profiler, having insight in both these fields will be good. I am looking forward to hearing from guest speakers and people that have knowledge and experience. I truly looking forward to going to Discover Hopkins.

What sets me apart from other students applying to Wishbone is that I am defying statistics. It has been proven that many young girls from my demographic are either pregnant or have dropped out of school. My determination to become successful makes me hardworking so I can preserve. When program opportunities are presented in school, I balance my responsibilities and take advantage of them. One of my hobbies is wrestling. I have been on the wrestling team in my school for two years. This experience has given me the confidence to try new things, and most of all a team player. Even when I get to where I want to be in life, it is important that I give back to my community. These are qualities that set me apart.

A Note from Ms. Alston, Kathryn's Teacher

Kathryn would benefit from an extracurricular program so that she has continual focus on her goal of becoming a criminal profiler. In my time in education, I have not met a student that was adamant about such a complex career. Yet, that aspiration coupled with her work ethic is nothing short of attainable.Upon researching the requirements for Discover Hopkins at Johns Hopkins University, Kathryn would be a good fit because of her fervent excitement about the course offerings. Since Kathryn wants to be a criminal profiler, I know she was very excited about the Abnormal Psychology to Forensic Cases. The most compelling piece of Discover Hopkins is that Kathryn will learn all of this from accomplished professors. Additionally, the guest speakers and field trip will engage and broaden Kathryn's curiosity. On the social aspect of the program, Kathryn will be able to work side by side with a diverse group of intellectual peers. As iron sharpen irons, Kathryn will further learns what it means to collaborate and produce work at a competitive level.Kathryn will bring a progressive, determined, and jovial disposition to your summer cohort. This recommendation was giving with the respect that Kathryn is not a perfect person (as no one is), yet she is a wonderful young lady deserving of an opportunity to be within reach of her goals.

Nervous and excited for my experience at Johns Hopkins

What I'm most excited about is the courses I will be taking. I've never taken anything on abnormal psychology or on medicine. This will be very interesting and a whole new experience for me. Some of the goals I've set for myself while I attend John Hopkins are to learn as much as I can and work as hard as I possibly can. I want to take advantage of every opportunity this program will give me. What I'm a little nervous about is if I will make any friends during my stay there. At times I can be a little shy but I love to meet new people. One challenge that I will face is being away from my mother. She's all I have and I'll miss her deeply but it's for a good cause that I will be away from her. However, I will overcome it by calling her and keeping myself busy with the activities given at the program.

Thank you

Thank you so much for your charitable offers. Without your support I wouldn't be able to gain this wonderful experience. Your donations will help me get a better understanding of abnormal phycology and help me pursue my dreams. You've given me a great deal of help and I appreciate it a lot!
