My passion is acting.
In 5th grade I was introduced to Theatre. My Theatre teacher Ms. Shapiro Cooper made this "subject", at the time, into a life story of using collaborative art to tell an important message. It wasn't until 7th grade where I was cast as Mercutio (the death scene) and the Narrator for the end of Act II. Theatre then became so big to me that I became natural to acting and playing different characters because I like telling the perspectives from different view points. The transition from middle school to high school was easy for me because I took Theatre class again, currently taking it, and it has been wonderful working with actors and people who are showing true art.
I want to spread the positive message of Newark through Theatre and have a positive outlook on the community. Just as my school chants, I also want to give back to my community and make it successful. Seeing that UConn has Drama classes and Theatre, along with vigorous college courses, it'll help me manage my time more and create a schedule between my classes and acting. I am still having conflicted issues of managing my time between regular classes and theatre work and I figured this experience can help me focus on both at the same time instead of one or the other. Both an education and acting are very important to me because I need both to succeed. To me, I cannot let go of either of them.
"Have you met Milton yet? Milton is a star", said the Middle School teacher. She had been wowed by Milton many times and she was hoping he had made a good impression at the High School. He had! Milton only has two opportunities to shine in front of the entire school (the fall play & spring musical), but he has continued to pursue acting classes outside of school and prepare fully for his in-class acting/directing scenes and monologues. He is always craving more - bolder characters with a bigger payoff!
I highly and joyfully recommend Milton for UConn Pre-College Summer: Dramatic Arts & Theatre. He is the perfect candidate for this program. He mirrors our high school PRIDE values and is sure to bring those qualities to the every moment: P - he is a professional in every arena (from the classroom to the stage), R - he is able to reflect on his own behavior and be a god self-motivator, I - he wants to do well and earn it for himself (integrity), D - he never gives up, his GRIT and determination is key to his success, and E - he enthusiastically engages in every moment in rehearsal or the classroom (again, he wants to do well). I know that an experience like this will propel Milton into the upper echelon of teenage performers.
Driving through Eagleroad on July 10 to enter UCONN was the most nerve racking, intense car drive of all time. I'm usually an outgoing person, but entering such a huge, beautiful campus transformed me into one little shy guy. Although it was completely understandable, I shouldn't have been scared. UCONN staff welcomed me with warm smiles as I checked into my dorms. Strangers around my age welcomed me with sweet "Hellos" and big smiles as well. At that moment I felt as though I was home.
Throughout the course of the week, I got to meet many interesting people from all around the globe; Connecticut, New York, Texas, Canada, Puerto Rico, and even China! The RAs were so outgoing and made sure everyone was comfortable and just made the program so organized and safe. The professors in the Drama Program cared a lot about what our passion was and how we can contribute to the arts as a scholar. I remember my classmates and I every morning singing Hamilton songs while walking through Mirror Lake to get to class. These people made me learn new things about myself. All my life I was afraid of becoming an adult and gaining independence. However, I learned that it takes true grit and perserverance to wake up every morning to eat breakfast and then walk to class. WALK! As Lao Tzu once said, "A journey of a thousand miles begin with a single step."
Thank you so much for your contributions and helping me reach my future and goal! I appreciate everyone who donated or was even interested in donating in the first place. It's amazing how just your small action can change my future for the better. That's why I say thank you. Thank you for just being you and you are a great person. Without you, there wouldn't be a future to look upon.
Because you are the greatest and you are following your dreams. I will always have your back. Let's do this babyboy. Love, mami and family.
