Edmond's Story

At a very young age, working in the medical field has been a dream of mine. My passion started when I started to grow fond of animals. When my parents asked me what I wanted to be when I grow up, I would tell them that I wanted to be a veterinarian because I want animals to be happy and healthy. This love of helping animals soon developed to the love of helping people. What changed and motivated me to become a doctor instead of a veterinarian was the death of my grandpa. My grandpa died of lung cancer and that moment was the worse thing that had ever happened to me in my life. Currently, my grandma is having back pains due to weak bones. Both of these events have motivated me to become a doctor because the people I care most about are gone or in pain. I want to become a doctor so I can help and support the people I love and the loved ones of other people around me. Pursuing this passion makes me feel nervous because becoming a doctor requires diligence and responsibility. However, I will do my best to achieve this dream!

A Note from Ms. Moyer, Edmond's Teacher

Edmond has a burning desire to become a doctor and has known this since he was five years old. He wants nothing more than to shadow doctors and get some real-life experience since he identifies as a hands-on learner. He also is very eager to work with others on a team. I am so proud of him for pursuing such long-term goals. Edmond is an absolutely excellent person and student and I could not recommend him highly enough for your program!

Wrapping up a great trip to Summer Medical Institute at Georgetown!

I studied topics that medical students usually studied. Some of these classes includes genomics, forensics, radiology, diseases, human dissections, and behavior. We learned how to take blood pressure and draw blood in labs. We also learned about how the human body works by looking at cadavers.

The picture below is of my radiology class. This shows an X-ray of a stone in the bladder.
There were two events that had a significant impact on me. First was the lab where we took blood pressure and drew blood because I felt like I was a doctor and this event made me love being in the medical field even more. The second even was during a student panel where medical students spoke to us and answered our questions. I thought the panel made an impact in my life because they really motivated me to go to medical school even though it is difficult.
Attending this program has really influenced my plans for the future. Because of this program, I think I know what I am going to major in college and  what I am going to do after college. However, I still do not know what I am going to do in the medical field yet because there are a lot of choices to choose from.
I would recommend this program to a friend who wants to work in the medical field because this program really shows you what it feels like to be a medical student.
If I had one advice to give to someone that is doing the same program next year, I would tell them not to be nervous. Before the program started, I was always feeling nervous about the activities we are going to do there and and how many friends am I going to make there. I just want to say do not be nervous. I can tell you that the program is not hard but very fun. Also be yourself and you will naturally make  friends. Everyone I met so far were nice and helpful.

Great start to Summer Medical Institute at Georgetown!

My first day at the Summer Medical Institute at Georgetown was confusing at first but it got better. I got to Georgetown late, around 6:00 pm, and I did not know what to do. I began to ask people for help. Some of the people that helped me started to ask where I was from and what hobbies I liked. Soon, we grew curious about each other and began to talk more. My roommate, Tom, was the most helpful. He showed me around our dorm floor and informed me about the schedule. We also  had a lot of things in common like our passion and our interests. After dinner, all the students who were participating in the Medical Program had a big tour around Georgetown and its famous spots. Our RA also gave us cupcakes as a way to welcome us to Georgetown. Overall, it was a great first day!

One thing that has surprised me about this program are the hands-on activities we do. At first I thought that this program was going to be just lectures and field trips to the museums but I was wrong. Some of the activities that surprised me were taking glucose, blood pressure, breathing rate, and heart rate of a patient because we did it to a real person! I did not think that we will actually become the doctor and actually do what doctors do in their daily lives. Another activity that was also fascinating, but could not be done on a real patient, was when we drew blood out of a mannequin's arm because we also got to become the doctor. However, one activity that surprised me the most was the cadaver lab. Seeing a cadaver for the first time made me and my group nervous but the medical students working there mitigated our discomfort and motivated us to get excited to learn by explaining different parts of the human body to us.

If I had one advice to give to someone that is doing the same program next year, I would tell them not to be nervous. Before the program started, I was always feeling nervous about the activities we are going to do there and and how many friends I was going to make. I just want to say do not be nervous. I can tell you that the program is not hard but very fun. Also be yourself and you will naturally make  friends. Everyone I met so far were nice and helpful.

Below are two pictures.  One is a picture of me at one of the famous spots on the Georgetown campus.  The other is a picture of me drawing blood from a mannequin arm.

Excited to study medicine at Georgetown this summer!

When I think about Georgetown, I get excited but also a little nervous. I am excited about meeting new people during the program. To me, meeting new people means creating new bonds and memories. I am also excited about the things I am going to learn and the hands-on activities that I will be participating in. I am a kinesthetic learner, so this opportunity will be a great experience for me. I always wanted to be independent; however, I am nervous about going some place far on my own. Homesickness might also be another problem. Nevertheless, these fears will not stand in my way. One way to overcome these fears is to think about the exciting activities that I will take part in. Thinking about positive thoughts always calms me down and gets my mind off negative thoughts. Even though I might feel a little scared traveling far away from home, it will not prevent me from learning and finishing this program. Thank you again for helping me with this opportunity!
