My passion Biology.
My love for biology started in my 8th grade Living Environments class. My teacher made learning more engaging through daily experiments or explorations, group work, and hands-on observations. We learned about animal cells, plant cells, evolution, adaptation, DNA, mutation, anatomy, and many more. I looked forward to science class everyday and I was very interested in all the topics that made up the course. Since 8th grade, I have not been in another science class that I felt as passionate about until my junior year Biology class. This year, I am learning almost everything that I learned in my Living Environments class, however more in depth, and I still have not lost interest. Because of my continued interest in biology, I realized my passion for it.
Ashley will have the time of her life attending Envision NYLF Medicine. She has strong work ethic, strong communication skills, and an emotional and mental maturity that will prove to be extreme strengths in this program. Ashley has had limited exposure to people outside of her school and community, so having the chance to spend nine days away from home, with people from other cities, schools and backgrounds, will be just what she needs to develop her independence as she enters her senior year and begins the college application process.
I had the best time of my life at Envision NYLF. On the first day, it was no struggle to make a group of amazing friends that had a lot in common with me. Not only did I make new friends, but I also had multiple opportunities to pursue my passions and decide what path I want to take when choosing a career.
At the program, I participated in numerous simulations including outdoor healthcare which taught me how to take care of myself and others if we ever got injured and healthcare services were not available. I also participated in suturing simulations and phlebotomy simulations. I also watched a total knee replacement surgery and visited the George Washington School of Nursing, where I participated in hands-on activities that allowed me to mirror the life of a nurse.
Lastly, I visited and got a tour of the Johns Hopkins Medical School and Hospital. My entire experience at NYLF allowed me to learn and have fun while doing it. When the program started, I was unsure about which part of the medical field I wanted to focus my study on. However, after being exposed to different types of medicine and hearing from doctors of several different focuses, I decided that I may want to become an audiologist. This program has been beneficial in more ways than one and I am so grateful I was given the opportunity to attend and be apart of the NYLF community.
I am going to be participating in the Envision NYFL Medicine program at Maryland University this summer. I am really excited to join the program because I will get to experience what it's like to live and study on a college campus before I actually attend college. Also, I will be exposed to information that will be helpful as I start my journey to pre-medical and medical school. In school, there aren't a lot of opportunities to be around people that want to pursue the same career as me, so this program will allow me to be around people who have the same interests and goals as I do.
I am looking forward to working with students my age and making new friends while also learning and having fun. I chose this program because I have always loved science and I decided at an early age that I wanted to pursue science and medicine. This program will be a head start to a journey that I am excited to begin.
Good luck Ashley, I wish you all the success in your journey,

I love seeing women pursue careers in science and I know that any student Alisha Ragan would support is a student I'd be happy to support, too! Good luck, Ashley! :D
Ashley, have a fantastic experience geeking out on applying your knowledge about biology to the medical field!
