Michelle's Story

Volleyball is a sport that I have enjoyed playing since I was little. Ever since I saw my mom play as a curious six year old, I have wanted to play as well. I admired how focused she was during the game, which made me also want to join a sport that would have me focus on something so deeply that everything else would fade into the background. What makes me most excited about volleyball is getting to work with my teammates on the court and learning from great players around me. Being on the court makes me feel like I don’t have to worry about anything else in life. Whenever I’m playing, all I think about is the game and how great it feels to have the trust and support of my teammates.

I want to attend this program because it is an opportunity for me to better my skills and have more experience in volleyball. It is my dream to play volleyball in college, especially if I can earn a scholarship. I attend a small charter school with limited opportunities to push my skills in sports. This program interests me because I would be trained by experienced coaches who could help me better my skills and become the best player I can be. I also know that participating in this program would broaden my experience and help me build the skills to adapt to a new environment in college. In these ways, this program would make me a better player and a more knowledgeable person.

A Note from Mr. Sharar, Michelle's Teacher

Michelle is bright, curious and enthusiastic about learning. She takes on challenging work with a smile and loves meeting new people and experiencing new things. However, she has not had the opportunities to have many experiences beyond Richmond. She has the type of personality that people gravitate towards and as a result, she leaves a trail of positivity everywhere she goes. While she deserves the opportunity to participate in an extracurricular program due to her intelligence and character, the impact that she would could have on others would likely be more profound than anything else. Michelle is extremely passionate about volleyball and consistently puts every ounce of energy into practice and games. However, what sets her apart from the majority of student-athletes is her dedication to her teammates. She prioritizes the team ahead of the individual and recognizes that the most probable way for a group of people to succeed is if they are willing to do whatever it takes to help out their teammates.

Ready to work hard at Nike Volleyball Camp

I get very excited when I think about attending Volleyball Camp. Being at UC Berkeley will be very exciting because I will get to experience practicing volleyball at my dream school where I hope to play volleyball. I am excited about meeting new girls that are also passionate about volleyball and getting to interact with them as well. This will give me the chance to communicate with new people and experience making new friends in a college-like setting. Some goals I have set for myself while I attend are: not being shy to talk to and get to know new girls because I always have trouble talking to new people and get very shy. I want to push myself to come out of my shell and communicate with a lot of girls while I can. I think what I am most nervous about is meeting new people and interacting with them just because that has been something I have had trouble with before. To overcome that challenge I will push myself to communicate with a lot of different girls and think positively about interacting with them because it will help me in the future.
