My passion is biology.
I grew up in a small town in the Dominican Republic and was used to a daily pattern: wake up, take a bath, go outside and play with the cows or dogs, back home for dinner, go play, take a bath, go to bed. The cycle was constant. However, when I moved to New York this pattern quickly changed and my old habits seemed strange. In New York, I slept in more, watched television, and only took one bath a day. What made me change? Would I have remained the same if I stayed in DR? I am interested in the way that the mind works and the way that society shapes our idea of “normal.” I am passionate about understanding the biology behind the lifestyle differences of DR and NYC. I have a deep desire to learn more about biology in order to better understand the world around me.
Ruth is currently a sophomore at Fordham High School for the Arts. Since she completed the New York City Biology equivalent in 8th grade, she came to our high school and took physics as a Freshman. This year she is taking chemistry and attending the computer science club. She is rapidly pursuing any science experience that she can take advantage of at our school. In addition, she has completed some outside activities that have allowed her to get even more exposure to the sciences. While Ruth is very passionate about the sciences, she is also a generally gifted academic.
Ruth takes advantage of every minute in school to learn new things. She carries a book with her at all time and uses anytime "down time" in class to read her book. She is also an excellent collaborator. I can always count on Ruth to help teach her peers in a group setting in science. Ruth will quickly learn a topic and will explain that topic to her peers in order to help them also understand. Ruth is a very impressive sophomore who is passionate about learning new things- particularly in science.
So excited for this opportunity for you Ruth!
