My passion is Jazz.
I discovered my passion for Jazz after my freshman year in high school, when I played it for the very first time. As a bassist, I found everything, from the smooth walking bass lines to the solos that can be done with this style of music, to be amazing. Soon after learning my first Jazz style song, the genre took its place as one of my favorites. I simply could not find any other style of music that had the same feeling as Jazz; it is truly unique in its own way. This passion only grew when I started experimenting with the other types of Jazz, such as Latin, Blues, and Jazz-Funk.
Attending Litchfield Jazz Camp will help me explore my passion by granting me even more experience and a deeper understanding of what Jazz really is. This will lead to a greater appreciation for the art. In school I play both trumpet and bass in the Jazz Ensemble. Although I have a decent amount of experience with Jazz already, I have never attended something like this camp. When I come out of this, I will be an overall better musician, from reading music, to actually playing and improvising. With Jazz as my passion and this camp opportunity at hand, my love for Jazz will soar.
Edgar arrives early in the music room each morning to practice and jam with friends before class. He has a bass at home but would rather play with others, and his friends have nowhere to play except in school. He collaborates in independent musical activities with classmates, and though mainly self-taught on the bass, he has the intelligence to figure things out and learn from his peers. Though his passion is the bass, he needed to play trumpet in the band. It is difficult to practice his trumpet at home since he lives in an apartment building, but he has kept up with the older students. At Litchfield, he will be able to play with like-minded students and soak up the information the pros have to offer. Edgar will thrive in the music camp environment, and share his unique perspective as an urban, Latino youth.
This program will truly change the way that I view the possible and impossible. After this jazz camp, I am hoping to have many new skills and further my understanding of music itself.
