Kayla's Story

My passions are science and math.

In school, I was always good at science and math. I wanted to know and attempt to understand why things that happen in the world occur the way they do. Science allowed me to discover just that. Since discoveries are still being made essentially everyday, science continues to intrigue me. There is always going to be something new to learn and it is imperative to keep up with the world as new knowledge is uncovered. With math, there is always a solution, even when the answer is no solution. This is very similar to real life in the way that difficult situations will have always have a solution. I discovered my passion for math in 9th grade, and I have been able to challenge myself by taking difficult math classes and feel confident in doing so.

Attending Discover Hopkins will help me explore the wide field of medicine, which connects to my passion for science and mathematics. In using these math/science skills, I can learn how to best help and treat patients. This is a great program for me to participate in because I am hoping to become an obstetrician/gynecologist and this will give me more experience. The experiences and knowledge that I will gain will eventually help me advance in my future career. This program will also help me to grow as a person.

A Note from Ms. MacGillivray, Kayla's Teacher

Kayla is a young, amazing scientist in the making. As her chemistry teacher, I have been extremely impressed with her level of detail and attention the classroom. It became clear very quickly that Kayla was excited about both math and science. While other students struggled to understand new concepts, Kayla explored and understood new ideas quickly. I believe that this speed of understanding develops from her general excitement for learning in the STEM field. While some students can be challenging to motivate, Kayla self-motivates which allows her to accomplish impressive feats in the classroom. Kayla is hungry for a challenge. As an public arts focused school, we have many resources to challenge students in the Arts but we do not have many high level classes to push students in STEM. The Johns Hopkins Summer program will allow Kayla to flex her math and science skills in a setting that will challenge her abilities to push her to new levels.
