My passion is architecture.
After going through the architecture unit in my freshman year art class, I became interested in architecture and design. During my sophomore year, I was able to take the architecture class at my school, where I combined my art, design, and analytical thinking skills to learn about the intersection between aesthetics and function when designing buildings.
Attending UCLA Teen Archstudio Summer Institute will allow me to experience what an undergraduate architecture program is like and help me understand the process an architecture major will encounter. Through the mentoring of UCLA architecture and urban design students, I will be able to challenge myself and improve my designing abilities. In addition, I will be able to learn about their experiences as architecture and urban design majors and find out about the challenges that they face.
"It was clear to me from our first meeting that Lauren is a passionate, open-minded and bright young woman who is committed to her educational future. She is fully aware of the unique opportunity that lies ahead of her and how it can positively impact her family. She is community-minded and enjoys building relationships with other people.
Lauren is self-motivated and responsible, which is evident by her desire to learn more about her field of interest - architecture. While most high school students are struggling to fit in amidst a new social atmosphere, Lauren kept her sights focused on learning more about the the architecture field. As a result of her unique background, she’s truly empathetic and has the ability to relate to other students and their personal situations."
I would like to once again thank Wishbone and everyone who has funded and supported me in attending the UCLA Teen Archstudio Summer Institute. I had an amazing time at the program and I was constantly learning about architecture, myself, and the people I met. Everyday was very intense, as we would spend 15+ hours in the studio doing architectural drawings and making models, but nevertheless I enjoyed the process and the final products were very successful. I enjoyed getting to learn about the graduates and undergraduates who taught me throughout the two weeks. Being able to even see some of the projects they have worked on was invaluable and getting to see the architecture in Los Angeles was a very fun experience. I'm glad that I got to know so many people from various parts of the world, and overall everyone was very kind. I now have a greater appreciation for architecture majors, the profession as a whole, and I have a clearer idea of where I want my career to go. Moreover, my experience was unforgettable and thrilling.
After a very challenging, but memorable junior year I am excited to start my summer. I am also very excited to start my architecture program at the UCLA Teen Archstudio Summer Institute! While I know it will be a rigorous program, I look forward to learning and meeting new people. I look forward to learning from the undergraduate mentors, professionals, and the other students I will encounter. I also look forward to working on projects, as they will prepare me for the Advanced Architecture Class I will engage in for the next school year. Lastly, I am excited that I will be given the opportunity to experience what it is like to live on a college campus, and I look forward to building relationships with the other students I will meet. I am grateful for all of the people who have supported me in attending the UCLA Teen Archstudio Summer Institute and I know that I will have an amazing time at the program.
