My passion is medicine.
Medicine has been my passion ever since I was little. I remember being interested in the whole concept of becoming a doctor and helping others who were sick. As I grew older, I became more aware of the different types of doctors there are and the different fields one can go into within the medical field. Sadly, one of my loved ones passed away due to cancer. From that moment, I knew that I wanted to become a doctor to help patients and their families.
Attending the NSLC Medicine and Healthcare program will help me develop my passion by providing me with information about what it truly means to pursue a career in the medicine field. I want to learn about the different branches that the medical field can expand to and the different tasks that each one requires.
"Marcela is fully committed to the maths and sciences in order to pursue her dream of becoming a doctor. In her 10th grade year, she took on two math classes at the same time in order to be on track to take calculus her senior year. Now, in her 11th grade year, she is taking a special after school class in order to be able to take the AP Chemistry exam this spring.
Marcela is very serious about becoming a doctor, but she needs the opportunity to learn more about what it takes to become one. "Doctor" is a general idea, and I think a program like NSLC Medicine & Healthcare will help Marcela figure out what kind of medicine she may be most interested in. The program will also help her make valuable connections and meet mentors that will be able to help guide her through the difficult process of getting into medical school.
Overall, this program was very interesting. I realized that I do want to pursue a career in the medicine field, specifically as an Oncologist. This program opened my eyes to different possibilities and gave me insight into how doctors work. One part I enjoyed was a session in which I learned how the process of figuring out a person's medical history works. I was able to both understand the necessary things that needed to be asked and to try and ask a few questions myself. Thank you so much for contributing to my great experience.
This summer, I will attend the NSLC Medicine & Healthcare program at UC Berkeley. This program is my chance to have some background experience of what the medical world is like. Students, like I, will be able to engage in simulations that can compare to real-life situations at either a hospital or clinic. These simulations will help us "be in the shoes" of doctors for multiple times throughout the program. Not only that, but we will also get to meet doctors that are in different departments in the medical world.
I chose this program because I aspire to become a doctor myself, Surgical Oncologist to be exact. I chose this program because I believe it would be the perfect opportunity for me to engage and really understand in depth both the struggles and work that a doctor has to go through each day. I'm really hoping that this program enhances my views on medicine and motivates me to pursue my passion upon enrolling into university. In addition to that, I am also looking forward to collaborating with other students who share the same passion as me. It would be really fun to work with students and share the same experiences that help us acquire new knowledge. Overall, I am really looking forward to attending this program and learning as many things as I can.
