Alex's Story

My passion is art, specifically writing.

Art is the translation of one’s imagination and soul. Odd ideas constantly pollute my brain. It is as though my mind is library of books waiting to be read. The written word appeals to me. A series of collected thoughts that I can arrange in any way. Crafting something that I can connect with others through. It’s strangely exhilarating, yet comforting, as I struggle with face to face conversations. Writing is my escape from reality, a way of calming nerves and anxiety. My middle school career was plagued with stress. When I was at my worst, I found an outlet in venting through my work. It was comforting to have characters feel the same way I did. I wasn’t alone. Short stories grew into chapters, and beyond, until writing became a part of everyday life for me, like breathing.

Writing has always played a big part in my life, and I believe it will in the future. In college, I want to double major in chemical engineering and creative writing. To do so, I want to get as much experience in my field as possible. Attending Education Unlimited Emerging Writers Institute with other young writers would help me broaden my horizons and get opinions on my work from my peers. I feel I would add to the dynamic of the program by offering my insights and experiences as a writer who has been in a workshop, to improve not only my skills, but the others' as well.
