Maryclare's Story

My passion is medicine.

I discovered my passion for medicine when I traveled to Nigeria for my grandpa's funeral. During the burial, I met his doctor and he offered to show me around his hospital. When I arrived, it looked old and rusty, dirty and unappealing. He took me to the pre-operation floor, and I couldn't believe my eyes. Tons of beds crowded into one room, no defibrillators, and no anesthesia machines. They had EKG machines and an ultrasound, but none of the medication offered was in good condition or up to date. After looking around, I began to envision that very hospital, reformed, in the best way possible. I began to imagine what it would be like to change Nigeria's healthcare system for good; helping people get the right treatment, and providing them with machines that'll prevent unnecessary death. This is what I wanted to do with my life.

Being able to attend Summer at Brown will help me pursue my passion for medicine because I'll be exposed to opportunities and courses at a higher level. The number of courses this program offers under Medical & Health Studies is incredible! Each time I read about each individual course, I get so excited! The thought of me actually conducting independent lab projects, shadowing a medical doctor, and sharing ideas about diseases prevalent during our time and how to fix them fills me with joy! How often do opportunities like that come about? I'll be surrounded be people who share the same passion as me, and even being in the same room will inspire me and remind me that my dream isn't impossible.
