My passion is basketball, which I started playing basketball in the seventh grade because it was one of the few sports offered at my school. In the beginning, it felt like I was nowhere near the skill level of my peers, but I'd always make an effort to try my best. Although I wasn't the best at it in the beginning, it pushed me to want to play and improve more. I took advantage of every opportunity I had because my school was the only place where I had access to a basketball hoop.
My dream is to continue playing for my high school, and even in college. I'd like to use this opportunity of attending US Sports Nike Basketball Camp to improve my skills and pursuing something I love to do over the summer.
James is an very motivated and very persistent individual, when committed to learning something, he is extremely dedicated to make this happen. James is part of the Google Code Next program and I am his mentor. Code Next is a program that connects Google Engineers as mentors to students from underrepresented communities in the tech industry. Many apply to this program but only a few candidates are accepted. The program is time consuming and requires James to visit the Code Next lab at least a few times per week; he always attends. As per my recommendation James has already started to learn the basics of Machine Learning which will prove to be a competitive edge as the landscape of the tech industry changes in that direction. As James? mentor, I am convinced that he will bring energy, effort, dedication and enthusiasm to the US Sports Nike Basketball Camp. He will learn a lot from the program and also contribute to the experience of other attendees of the program in a positive way.
Thank you so much for helping me reach this goal. I am really excited for this new experience and opportunity to improve my basketball skills. I am also excited about being able to stay at a UC dorm!
