My passion is feminism.
Living in such a progressive first world country where women do not have the same rights as men baffles me and drives my passion for gender equality. My sophomore year of high school I told one of my brothers I was applying for a computer science program called C/I. The look on his face was strange as if he could not picture a female doing a job usually done by a man. As I continued to share my interest in computer science with others, I quickly noticed it was not only my brother who held this stereotype, but also many of both my male and female peers. This sparked my interest in feminism and my desire for gender equality. I strive to break these stereotypes by engaging in activities such as computer science and Barnard College Women’s Leadership Institute.
Attending Barnard College Young Women's Leadership Institute would help me explore feminism by further improving my knowledge on the topic. During the two week program, I will be surrounded by people who will help me evolve my thoughts on feminism in new and innovative ways. I want to become more educated on feminism so I can argue and stand up for what I believe in by using facts and well-developed evidence. Barnard College Young Women's Leadership Institute will help me become a well-grounded advocate for gender equality.
"Mayeline is the perfect applicant for the Barnard College Young Women's Leadership Institute. As somebody who has persevered through many challenges as both an immigrant and a young women, I think this opportunity would give her many of the tools she could use to fight for the rights of those who may not be able to speak up for themselves either due to a language barrier or a lack of exposure to the opportunities they deserve.
Her involvement in the Computer Science club at school has shown her that women are capable of stereotypical "men's jobs," yet she still gets a very backwards response from many people in society. This has really motivated her to speak out on these issues, making great strides for young women at our school. Barnard College's program will help her make even more of a difference for women and become an even stronger proponent of gender equality."
I am so thrilled to be attending Barnard this summer and it is all thanks to my donors. This is a one in a life time opportunity that will greatly impact my future. Learning about Feminism at my dream college will further improve my knowledge on the topic and my passion for the topic. To be surrounded by other young female leaders while learning about your passion is not an everyday thing, and to know that I'll get to do just that this summer will greatly impact my life. I am looking forward to working with other people my age and sharing ideas and advice with one another. I believe that participating in this program will inspire me to be a leader in my community and guide me towards what career I want to pursue in college.
Thank you so much for your support, stay tuned!!!
Continue putting positive energy out into the universe and that's what you will get back!
Good Luck, Mayeline !! I am rooting for you !
