Nursing has been my passion since I was very young. When I got to high school I was slightly unsure if nursing would be the career for me. In my sophomore year two very important things cemented my desire to be a nurse. I joined a Medical Careers course at my school and was excelling at it. I began to feel like this was something that I was pretty good at so naturally it became my favorite class. I was one of the top students in my class earning an A+ for both semesters. I was also accepted into Medical Careers 2 where I have more hands on experience and clinical hours. I had discussed my career path with my grandfather a lot with uncertainty but the day he died he told my sister and I that we should help people like him and pursue a career like nursing.
Attending NSLC Nursing will expose me to nursing before I actually experience it in college. This is a great opportunity because it will improve my knowledge of the medical field and maybe narrow down the many nursing options. This program is not only for the hands on learning but also the lectures and mentors that will be at the program to help guide us in the right direction. Being accepted into this program will be a good stepping stone to pursuing my passion for nursing for many reasons. First being that it gives me the experiences that I will likely get in nursing school so I will be better equipped to deal with them such as Mock Code and Midwifery Labs. Secondly, when I am applying to colleges for nursing it will look good that I have been exposed to nursing already and that I have had these experiences.
I met Rheanna her sophomore year in medical careers 1. Very early on in the course, Rheanna showed an interest in the field. She positively contributed to class discussion, asked poignant clarifying questions, and demonstrated competence in the course content. As she stated, she received an A+ both semesters in Medical Careers 1, earning herself as a top student in that introductory course and one of only twenty two students accepted into Medical Careers 2/CNA course. Rheanna continues to excel in the course content including nursing assistant skills, medical terminology, vital signs, body systems, etc. Rheanna has expressed an interest in nursing and demonstrated a passion in learning the material and interacting with patients. I truly believe any opportunity allowing Rheanna to learn more about the nursing field, clinical skills and career will benefit her ability to study nursing after college. Rheanna is the type of student that will take advantage of this program and use her own time to continue to build on the skills and knowledge she will learn through the NSLC Nursing program.
Tomorrow I will start my first day at the National Student Leadership Conference for Nursing at Yale! I am very excited to attend this program and learn more about the nursing field. This is a really great opportunity for me to expand my knowledge and experience in a medical setting. I wanted to take another chance to thank everyone who helped me by donating, sharing and just sheer moral support. You all have given me the opportunity to live out a portion of my dream this summer and it means the world to me. Thank you.
Congratulations on reaching your goal! The Dalio Foundation is proud to provide support as you discover your passions and pursue your dreams.
Good luck to you Rheanna.
