Julian's Story

My passion is mechanical engineering, robotics.

As a nine year old, I desired to be a gunsmith. I read a book on weapons of the past and present. I was blown away by the complexity of these weapons engineered to destroy. I felt the desire to recreate, improve, and revolutionize these weapons of the past. I wanted to be the man to usher in an era similar to Einstein and his atomic bomb. Recently, through my introduction to robotics during my freshman year, I have become much more interested in the capability of creating something less destructive. Although I still remain very interested in creating weapons, I came to terms with it being a profession that I am not entirely ready to comprehend. Bringing about a new age of weaponry is not only a feat, but it also results in the deaths of those using them and those on the opposite ends of them. The idea of creating something capable of completing a task a human can, or cannot do for that matter, fascinates, inspires me, and fits my intentions. Fictional robot suits like those common to Iron Man are now able to be turned from fantasy to real life. I want to accomplish the technological feat, and usher in this new form of technology within our reach.

ID Tech explores the mix of STEM and college like values in order to help participants find their passion. A typical day consists of moving about campus, exploring different skills and hands on projects. Part of one of the passions they allow exploration of is robotics. Since the beginning of middle school, I have always been strong in science and mathematics. During my freshman year, this academic strength influenced a passion in robotics that this program will further. My ability to fantasize paired with the increased dependency on robots by the world leads me to the logical conclusion that there is a growing market for robots. As a result, I find it very beneficial to have developed this passion for when the need arrives to utilize it.

A Note from Mr. Stano, Julian's Teacher

Last spring our school offered engineering beginning in the fall of Julian's sophomore year. He was one of the first students to sign up for this year long class in engineering which he will be committed to the next three years. He has also taken on a leadership role in Robotics Club during his freshmen and sophomore year.

I know Julian is a great candidate for iD Tech Camps because it aligns to instruction that he will be pursuing when he gets to college. He has done an excellent job in all of his classes throughout high school consistently scoring over 90%. As a sophomore he is currently enrolled in AP World History, the most challenging class he has had to take so far. He continues to do well in every academic class but iD Tech Camp will give him the most experience in working towards his future career goals.

My experience at iD Tech camps New York City

I would like to begin by thanking my donors once again for granting me the incredible opportunity to attend my program. The idea that wonderful people took time and money to ensure I attend a program that I now hold very high on the scale of life changing experiences is phenomenal.

Prior to attending my iD Tech program with the help of Wishbone, I was not very sure of what I wanted to pursue with my life. Since my introduction into the Uncommon school system in the fifth grade, I found school to be easy for me. I can get high grades and complete whatever assignment is given to me and meet the high expectations set out by my parents, teachers, and peers. When I entered high school however, I found that not knowing what I really wanted to commit my time to made the whole process of attending school monotonous. I attended school knowing that I was going to continue to get high grades, but I found I didn't really know why. I knew it was to ensure I attended a great college, but why? iD Tech answered this question.

Among not knowing what I wanted to do with my life, I was, and still am, in love with video games. I knew there were jobs associated with this, but I never really looked into the possibility of having one of those positions. Attending iD Tech solidified my understanding of video games and how I could apply them to my life. I learned the process of 3D level design and my instructor explained that doing it is very much a profession and a part of game development that is necessary to keep the culture alive. I am now entering my junior year of high school with an end goal in mind for college and my life as an adult. iD Tech very much helped me realize that I would love to be a part of game development, whether it be as a 3D level designer or fulfilling any other role associated with game development.

Pursuing my Passion at ID Tech

Over the summer, I will be attending a session of 3D level design utilizing Team Fortress 2. This is simultaneously a very exciting moment of my life and a very important part of my life. This is the first time that I will pursue something I have always been passionate about. This experience can either set in stone what I would like to spend my life doing or encourage me to keep on exploring. Either way, ID Tech is offering an opportunity to spend some of the summer taking part in an experience not many 16 year old teenagers living in Queens or Brooklyn normally participate in.

I am looking forward to meeting other people my age who share a similar passion related to engineering and technology in general. This is very exciting considering that there are not as many opportunities for students at my school who are really interested in these topics. Outside of my small group of friends, not many other people aspire to be game developers or mechanical engineers and Wishbone and ID Tech are allowing me to expand this horizon and find others who feel the same.
