My passion is science.
When I was five, my kindergarten class went on a trip to the aquarium. This was my first visit to see wildlife, and I was fascinated by the animals I saw. As I got into the 7th grade, I had a great science teacher. When Ms. White told us about cells, I was amazed to find out that tiny living things in our bodies had such huge roles. Each cell has a job, and together they let the body function a certain way. I struggled a bit in that class, but I loved the material so much that I was not willing to give up. I asked classmates for help and went after school for extra tutoring until I was able to get the hang of it.
iD Tech Camp will allow me to deepen my understanding far beyond the basic science that students must learn in high school. I am excited to expand my knowledge of STEM and experience the demands of college-level work so that I’ll be more prepared when I start university. It would also help me meet new people with the same interests as me, as well as further develop my love for science. Without Wishbone and iD Tech Camps, I wouldn't have the resources to have a learning opportunity like this, and there are not many educational programs near my neighborhood. This would get me one step closer to fulfilling my dreams.
Last year, I served as a Wishbone advocate for MarianaÛªs older sister, Guadalupe. As I met with Guadalupe in her home over several weeks to work on her application, I saw Mariana's curiosity about what we were doing. She is a naturally reserved and somewhat understated person, but she listened in on our conversations and seemed riveted by what was going on. I told her that when she got to ninth grade, she, too, could apply for a summer program in whatever she wanted to do, and her eyes lit up. Ever since then, she and I have both been looking forward to the time when she would be able to apply.
I have known Mariana since she was a first grader, and even at that early age she was clearly academically gifted. She has shone in every class she has taken, earning high marks not only through her natural intelligence but also through relentless hard work, which stems from her intense commitment to learning.
At summer camp I learned the basics of programming and coding. I made two games, bubble buster and a unicorn -inspired game. When I was creating the code for bubble buster, I changed it up a bit and decided to do bricks instead of bubbles. In my final project, I had many ideas and my instructor helped me incorporate all of them into a game. I had lots of fun and made lots of new friends. One of my closest friends from the program, Zara, was very nice and gave me a gift! This was by far the best summer experience I have had.
This school year has been super cool! I was involved in many programs that helped me gain experience in many things. For example, I learned how to sell products efficiently and make business plans. I’m also in this other amazing program called Panthers go to College and this year. It gives us the opportunity to visit colleges in San Diego. This trip is going to be a really good experience for me to get to know my peers better outside of school. I am ready to go out and learn about programing. One thing I know for sure is that I am a bit nervous about the program since I don’t know a lot about programing. Still, I will get to meet new people and that makes the trip worthwhile. I am most excited about the exposition, where we get to show our parents what we learned. I am hoping to make new friends at camp and bond with them. Thank you for your donations!
Once upon a time my mom was a 9th grader who loved biology. She grew up to be Dra. Diaz- a terrific pediatrician for over 30 years. Once upon a time my cousin was a 9th grader who loved genetics. She completed he doctorate in evolutionary biology- Dra Diaz Lamiero. My god daughter is in 8th grade and loves Math, perhaps she can join you in a decade to solve a tough STEM problem. From our geeky STEM family - best of luck Future Dra. Mariana.
Good luck, Mariana!
you go girl, light the world
Get it girl!
You sound like a wonderful young woman trying to pursue her dreams. Work hard. Never give up. I'd love to meet you and help when I can. Carol friend of Ingrid O'Brien
I think it's really important for young girls to be involved with STEM fields!
Mariana,
I never had the pleasure to be your teacher but Belén was in my Kindergarten class my first year teaching at East Oakland Pride and I also had the pleasure to have your little sister a few years later. Ms. O'Brien spoke very highly of you. You truly deserve this opportunity so here's a little donation to support you towards accomplishing your dream this summer.
Never stop pushing yourself and always fight for what you believe you can do. Best luck to you, Mariana
