My passion is leadership.
After being elected as ASB Vice President at my school, I realized that I love leadership, especially event planning. Last year, I planned my first school dance and realized how much I liked being in a leadership role. I enjoyed going through the math to discover the predicted revenue, including how many tickets we would need to sell to earn a profit and what our budget should be. I also liked creating groups for each part of the dance: advertising, decorations, food. Hearing other people talking about the event, listening to the excitement around it, and convincing people to go were all parts of the process that made me feel confident in my leadership role.
I am really thankful for the leadership opportunities that my school has given me. I've learned to speak up, and I know that I have grown immensely as a leader throughout the past few years. Nevertheless, there is always room for improvement, which is what I like about leadership: there are always traits that you can develop to become a better leader, and there’s no way to be content with where you're at.
"Janelle's sophisticated thinking and strong sense of ethics will make her an ideal candidate for the Economics for Leaders programs. During her research on factors that lead to a rape culture in the United States, Janelle encountered a San Francisco event called a Walk Against Rape. She chose to organize a group of friends and peers to attend the walk and invited me to chaperone the group. This level of engagement with her values demonstrates Janelle's character; she possesses a combination of curiosity, passion, and grit that will make her a strong advocate for justice. I believe these qualities make her an ideal candidate for Economics for Leaders, and attending this program will equip Janelle with skills to put her values into action."
Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to attend Economics for Leaders. I came into the program feeling a little down, but the people there, the activities, and everything I have learned while at the program really opened my eyes to the beautiful world out there ahead of me. I learned that I really do enjoy the idea of leadership and that there are many different kinds of leaders. The environment at the program was just so welcoming and fun. I truly felt like I belonged. This program gave me a new perspective, and it made me believe that anyone can have a new start at any time. We should not be afraid to start again and build ourselves to be the best we can be. Following this program, I am going to do my best to become the best leader I can be and to always remember my core values.
Thank you again for helping me attend this program. I am a different person today, and this would not have been possible without any of you.
I am very grateful for this opportunity to attend Economics for Leaders at UC Berkeley. I chose this program because I am interested in majoring in Business Management, and I know that economics and leadership are two very important things when entering the business field. I am excited to meet new people, gain knowledge about economics, and better myself as a leader. Thank you for donating and helping me attend this program!
