My passion is cooking.
I always have loved cooking. It makes me be in a happy place. It's something I feel I have learned how to do on my own. But I've never taken cooking classes. I like the idea of being taught different techniques and recipes that I can try at home. I've also recently been selected to serve as a student leader with the WHEELS-Good Flavor Farms Project partnership, a farm to school program with a social justice aim.
"I have known Thalya three years and have had the pleasure of working with her as her ninth grade team leader, tenth grade college prep teacher and as her eleventh grade SAT prep instructor. In my role as Dean of Student Affairs, I have been moved by her maturity, openness and curiosity. Thalya has often discussed food justice and culinary arts-related options for her college and career choices. In her college prep course, her case studies focused on sustainable food systems and culinary arts programs that sought to serve poor communities of color."
I would like to thank everyone who made it possible for me to participate in this intense cooking camp. With the help of our instructors Chef Guido, Chef Jill, and Chef Jeffery Moon I was able to delicious dishes like Ensaladilla Rusa and Poisson En Papillote and many more. The first two days of this program were very difficult for me because I was not used to being in a very hot kitchen and standing up for 5 hours straight then going back home with my heavy equipment. However, after I became accustomed to how everything worked, I enjoyed meeting new people and receiving tips from my instructors. Once again, thanks to all for this wonderful experience
I'm excited to be exploring cooking school options! I've always been passionate about food and food justice. Cooking classes will enrich my work as a student leader with the Good Flavor Farms/Washington Heights Expeditionary Learning School Farm-to-School Project, which is entering its second year in 2015-2016, when I am a senior.
As a founding student at the Washington Heights Expeditionary Learning School, I'm already looking ahead to college options and would like to be able to apply to schools with both hands-on and theoretical culinary options. I can't wait to attend Culinary Cooking Camp for Teens!
