My passion is Women and Gender Studies.
I discovered a passion for Women and Gender Studies as early as eleven years old, in fifth grade. I became observant of my agonizing desire for gender equality and how hotheaded I became when people defended the idea of man inevitably being dominant against women. I always had this itch for vocalizing my thoughts concerning this topic, and if my thoughts were to be shadowed, I felt as though I had been doing a great disservice to the community of women that surround me daily. One may argue that I am a feminist and issues concern feminism is my field of interest. As I grew up and gradually learned the history behind gender studies, I have grown rather fond of the topic and am really interested to see what more I can learn from such a liberating topic.
Attending Barnard's Liberal Arts Intensive Program will help me better understand and truly receive an on-deck experience to the endless world of liberal arts and the justice it provides our world and the individuals within it. Being a part of this program will also help me identify what in the liberal arts field is my true specialty and what in the field is something I may perhaps not wish to desire when I enter college as a freshman. In addition, The Barnard Liberal Arts Intensive Program will help me further dissect my reason for having such a love for Women & Gender and Studies.
Vivian spent four weeks last summer commuting to New York University for the Metro Center's Summer College Prep Program. Her goal of attending college is unwavering. She is more than prepared to spend another summer on a college campus at one of the colleges she is considering very highly (Barnard College). Earlier this year, Vivian attended the HEOP Breakfast for prospective Barnard students, and networked with an alumna who currently attends Barnard. The Barnard student was majoring in international relations, and Vivian shared her thoughts about being of Lebanese and Ghanaian descent and although she doesn't exactly know what she wants to pursue in the future she knows that her work will involve the native countries of her parents. As an alumna myself of a women's liberal arts college, I feel a special kinship to Vivian's educational and personal goals.
I just want to thank all of my campaign supporters and the donors who contributed funds to my program. Without you all, I would not have been able to attend this life-changing program, and for that, I am forever grateful. When I first entered the gates of Barnard College, I was honestly intimidated and yet excited to learn and immerse myself with challenging and intellectually stimulating women. I feared that I would look incompetent in the eyes of my professor however, as time passed, I developed a sense of routine after the first two weeks. My experience was one I wouldn't take back ever. I learned too much and made friends from all over the world. From places such as Beijing, China to San Diego, California. It has been a true honor and again thank you for all the support!
I can't believe it, but in less than a week I will be attending one of the most prestigious and highly selective colleges, Barnard College for the Summer. I am so excited to become a part of an amazing community of female students and faculty who emulate the type of women and leader I one day wish to become. I want to again thank all of those who made it possible for me to attend this program. Without all of your kind donations and generosity, this dream of mine would not have been a reality. I will be departing to Barnard College this coming Sunday and couldn't be any more excited. Thank you all for your generosity and support, you all are truly my backbone in regards of making this amazing opportunity possible for me.
Best of luck, Vivian!
I enjoyed your presentation at the Bronx Board meeting. I wish you well!
