My passion is law.
I first became interested in law through television: Law and Order, CSI, Criminal Minds, and daytime judge shows. My young mind was captivated with the process of solving crimes, and the idea of seeking justice through the law has kept me enraptured for years.
When it time came to apply to high school, I made the choice to go to The Urban Assembly School for Law and Justice. My school uses the law to teach critical thinking skills. I have grown to love the complexity and the challenge of interpreting the law. After my 9th grade year, I officially decided that I would like to become a criminal defense lawyer.
My school has continued to expand my interest in the law through my 10th grade Constitutional Law class and by allowing me to take a college course on Criminal Justice at John Jay College. In this course, I learned about the Criminal Justice process. I explored what happens to the criminal when apprehended, how the criminal travels through the system, and how the criminal is punished. I even got the chance to learn about psychological aspect of the criminal mind.
Attending Blueprint Summer at Lehigh University will allow me the opportunity to continue developing my passion for law.
"Janel is one of the more sophisticated, mature, and thoughtful students that I have had the pleasure of working with. She has maintained a consistently high GPA, receives positive feedback from staff, and is in the top of her class. From the beginning of her 9th grade year, I have been struck by Janel's poise, confidence, and independence. Janel has been focused on her academic and professional development since she began high school.
Janel is thoughtful, sensitive, non-judgmental, and has positive rapport with staff and students alike. I rarely have heard her complain, and she is always helpful and an excellent listener. When interacting with Janel, you can tell that she is engaged and interested in the perspective of others. These are all qualities that would serve her well as both a member of the Wishbone community and the Blueprint Summer at Lehigh University program. Janel would grow tremendously if given the opportunity to learn among equally curious and intellectual peers."
My time at Blueprint Summer Programs at Lehigh was amazing. From the first day I arrived, the kind and friendly staff made me feel comfortable in what would be my home for the next two weeks. I did not know when I first arrived that I would leave two weeks later with a new perspective and new knowledge. I also did not know that I would form friendships that would go beyond camp. While at camp, I studied Psychology my first week and Business my second week. During my Psychology course, I learned so much about the brain and engaged in vibrant discussions with my other classmates about how our cultures have affected and shaped who we are today. One highlight from Psychology is when we watched a movie called "A Beautiful Mind". As we watched the movie we were able to understand how schizophrenia affects the mind. In Business a big focus that we had is understanding who you are marketing to. We learned that even though you like and enjoy something, that does mean others will, so knowing and understanding who you are trying to target is a large part of creating a successful business. In business, we watched episodes of 'The Profit' and observed how to create smart business plans and successful products. While I did enjoy my classes very much, a lot of the most treasured memories I have come from when I was bonding with my new friends outside of camp. When we played intense card games, had a trashion show (a fashion show where 'clothes' are made of garbage bags) and we sung our hearts out to Taylor Swift in Karaoke -- just a few of my favorite memories. My time at Blueprint has allowed me to build lasting friendships. I would not have been able to participate and if it were not for the incredible sponsors who had faith in me and gave me an opportunity to participate in a program that gave me motivation to go into my senior year invigorated and ready to tackle my AP courses and apply to colleges. So to the sponsors, once again thank you so much.
I'll be attending BluePrint at Leigh University this summer to study business and psychology. I am very excited to participate in this program because it is my first time attending a program like BluePrint. I am looking forward to experiencing what it feels like to be on a collage campus, making new friends, and learning about different topics and subjects that I would not otherwise have access to. One possible major that I have been considering for college is Business Management/Marketing, and attending BluePrint at Leigh University will help me get a sense of what to expect in a business course and decide if majoring in business is the best fit for me.
I am very excited about for my overall BluePrint experience and I can't wait to get a sense and feel of what it would be like on a college campus. I look forward to meeting new people and making new friends who can share their experiences and teach me something new. I am walking into BluePrint with an open mind and high hopes. I chose BluePrint because of the unique experience that will be offered to me and I can't wait to attend!
