Maria's Story

My passion is playing sports and working as a team.

I enjoy being on the court playing alongside my teammates and competing with others. When I play with other players, it motivates me to become better. My coaches also motivate me in a positive way to keep up with the team since I have a hard time with my asthma. When I entered high school, I had to earn a certain GPA to be able to play, so I decided to work hard in school and I asked others for help. I didn't want to let my team down because of my grades. I positively influence my teammates and motivate them to keep on pushing with me as well.

Nike Volleyball Camp will help me deeply explore my passion. It will help build up my leadership skills and tighten up my skills for the next level. My goal for the Nike Camp is to be able to prove myself that I am capable of playing in college. By learning from different coaches and having them teach me new things, I will become more in love with the sport. This is the first time I'm applying for a camp like this one, and it is because I know it will help me become better.

A Note from Mr. Zarazua, Maria's Teacher

Although I've primarily worked with Maria as her Social Studies instructor for 11th and 12th grade, I also know her through sports, including one year when I was the school's athletic director. She immediately stood out being the only girl on our boys' baseball team. We do not field a girls' softball team so Maria tried out for the boys' team and contributed, including playing as an outfielder and getting hits. She also starts on our girls' basketball team.

Volleyball is her passion and she has played every year, showing marked improvement each game. A challenge she's had is playing at a school with a limited athletic budget and facilities so the team only practiced once or twice a week. Furthermore, we're a small school in a new league that isn't the most competitive, although it has steadily improved each season. Thus, Maria has often had to rely on raw talent as opposed to consistent training and high competition.

All young people should have the opportunity to pursue their passions and work at them. I really admire Maria for playing baseball with male classmates.
