Raul's Story

My passion is exploring.

How I discovered this passion was when I first ventured into a program called Junior Reserve Officer’s Training Corps (JROTC). At first I did not know about this program, yet I gave it a try and I ended up really liking it! They teach you how to develop good leadership, responsibility, and overall to become a better citizen in the world and your community. I want to expand my knowledge and see from different perspectives how other cultures view the world from their way of living. What I’ve been doing to give myself a start is joining the program and also volunteering at the Maritime Aquarium, which is where I have developed much of my social skills because I interact with various people who may want to ask a question or I help them get to a certain place in the building.

Attending Phillips Exeter Academy Summer School will help me expand my exploration of learning and adapting to new ideas, environments, and cultures. This would be an amazing opportunity for me. I’m intrigued in going to the program because I will have an opportunity to explore and experience something I would not be able to do at my current school. I will have the chance to meet people from around the world who share my same interests in learning and exploring different ideas and cultures. This is something normally someone wouldn't have the chance to do or simply wouldn’t have the time to do.

A Note from Ms. Sienkowski, Raul's Teacher

Raul is a young man of great integrity and is very responsible. He cares for his younger brother (age 5) and sister (age 1) while both parents work a second job. Raul is responsible for picking his brother up from school, feeding and preparing both children for bed at night, and then, after his young siblings are in bed, he does his homework and prepares for the next day. I have never heard Raul complain or whine about his responsibilities at home but I have heard him talk of how much he loves his family. In attending Phillips Exeter Academy Summer School, Raul will have the opportunity to have a wonderful and "normal" experience. Both parents have assured Raul that this is something he should, and needs, to do, and both are so proud of his goal-setting. Raul's mother recently told me that she and her husband will do everything in their power to ensure that Raul has an amazing summer experience as "that's why [they] I came to this country, for my children." Raul is so friendly, outgoing, and hardworking and he will finally have the chance to meet like minded people and, perhaps, life long friends. The Phillips Exeter Academy Summer School has the potential to change this young man's life in ways he never thought possible.

Phillips Exeter Academy - Amazing Experience!

I want to thank you for giving me this wonderful opportunity. I never thought going to Exeter would be eye opening and a fantastic experience. As I met students from all over the world, we shared our own different perspectives on how we view the world and beliefs. I felt I belonged there. I was amazed at how quickly I made friends during my classes and the strong bonds we built.

My classes were Creative Experience, Visual Thinking, and Architecture. These classes were amazing because I learned to step out of my comfort zone, take initiative, and expand my artistic abilities. I learn the importance of Harkness and this method works better for me since I get to learn more and get involved with my classmates. Once again, without your support, this amazing experience would have not come true, nor would I have met my friends who made me realize that there are people out there who share the same goals and ambitions as I do. Thank you!
