My passion is baking.
This became my passion as I grew up. I always loved baking cakes and cupcakes with my mom and I always preferred sweet Mexican bread over candy. Growing up, Mexican sweet bread, like the pan dulce my mom often got, was comfort food to me. I also watched a lot of baking shows on TV such as Cake Boss and other baking competitions. I often saw that it was a lot of hard work, but also looked like fun nonetheless. I hope to learn about baking from this program and use these skills to bake for my family and special occasions.
Being a part of the Sur La Table program will help me explore the wonders of pastries. I've been told many times that baking is a precise science, where the proportions and ingredients need to be exact for a reason, otherwise the outcome would be off from what it should be. I really enjoy food, cooking, and baking. Being a part of this program will be an honor because I want expand my knowledge and use it to cook for my family. I also want to be a part of the program to help me bring some recipes home and use my skills to teach my little sister who is also a baking fanatic like myself.
Gloria is a student who's passion shines from her eyes when she talks about it. When she wants to do something, she will let nothing stop her from finding a way to make it happen. With baking, she has taken every opportunity to learn from her family and practices whenever possible. Her focus and attention to detail are important skills she will use to make a great chef. In school, Gloria is a curious and engaged student that loves to learn. She has a growth mindset that helps her push through when classes get tough. This opportunity would provide her a chance to expand her skills in ways she can't in her home community and would allow her to explore careers in the culinary arts.
Thank you all for giving me the chance to attend the Sur La Table program here in San Francisco. It was so much fun learning about the techniques and other tidbits about cooking with a small group of kids about my age. It was also a great opportunity to get to know the big city for a week. Once again, thank you for giving me this opportunity to explore my passion for cooking.
I will be attending the Sur La Table summer program soon and I am ecstatic that I have this opportunity to expand my horizons and explore my interest in food and the science behind food. This program will have benefits not only for me, but for my family too. I have never taken cooking classes, aside from the lessons my mom has given me at home over the years; but now, I'd like to return the favor and teach her what I learn. I am looking forward to meeting other people from around the area and getting to know them. Thank you for helping me have this experience.
