My passion is the current legal and social issues the United States is facing. The US government has been trying to address the immigration issue with the discussions of potential immigration reforms. A reform that was approved a few years ago, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, was a huge step forward for the immigration issue and for young Latinos.
However, this does not apply to the family or parents of most of those young Latinos, or give them full legal status. Many Latino immigrants emigrated from their native country in search of a better life and future for their family. They leave family behind, and are separated in order to progress and succeed for the future of their children.
There should be reforms passed granting the ability to reside in this country as any other American to those who have not committed any crimes, those who work toward this country’s success as well as their own, to those whose motivation is to have a better life than the one they would’ve had in their native countries. They should be granted the ability to visit their family members and their countries of origin. We are all American, if we work and fight for the same country.
In a recent meeting with other school leaders, we discussed, at some length, the crucial role that the summer between junior and senior years has played and can play for our students. Lhia has already assumed some impressive leadership roles at WHEELS (which I expect she will share in her application). Lhia has a deep-down commitment to social justice (not to charity work or service projects) and has contributed to the imagining, building and refining of those systems that make WHEELS, WHEELS. She has helped to found every club, every sports team, every committee, every extra-curricular activity with which she has aligned herself at WHEELS because we are a growing school. To have the luxury to spend time out New York City, doing difficult things and allowing herself to focus on herself, will allow Lhia to come back to our school community recharged, recommitted and refreshed for what surely will be a challenging set of decisions before her.
At the College of Saint Rose Pre-College Experience, I was part of the Criminal Justice and Forensics program, and I learned so much about the subject. We learned a lot about Crime Scene Investigations and the entire process: we learned how to bag evidence, how to take crime scene pictures, how to draw a crime scene sketch, and how to take latent and footprint impressions, etc. We also learned about the judicial process from a District Attorney who visited our class one day.
On a field trip one day, we were taken to the New York State Police Academy and we talked to state troopers about their experience. We watched a video on the recruitment process, and this trip made me realize that being a trooper requires a lot of mental as well as physical strength, and full commitment.
The Pre-College Experience definitely has influenced my future plans! It inspired me and gave me a glimpse of what I will expect in college. I narrowed down the big list of possible concentrations to study, I learned about the field of criminal justice and forensics, what I dislike and what I think can be a possibility.
I would absolutely recommend this program. I think every teenager who plans to apply to college should be part of this program or one like it because it really gives you an insight of what will be a future for you one day. You stay in a freshman dorm, meet wonderful people, go on amazing trips, and learn so much from professors and professionals who have worked in the field for decades. I definitely didn't want to leave after the two weeks were done, and I am grateful for the opportunity.
My advice for future students is really to enjoy themselves and be open minded to new ideas and a new environment. Come prepared to learn, ask questions, and talk to all different types of people. Also be prepared to make your own decisions, to be more independent and responsible, as you will be living without your parents for two weeks. Take advantage of your time away and learn as much as possible!
Being in a college campus and staying in a dorm sounds so exciting. It will be the first time I leave home to stay away on my own. I am excited and nervous to get a glimpse of what will be reality for me in a year, living on my own, and becoming independent. I cannot wait to settle in my dorm, meet my roommate, and learn about criminal justice. Although I do not have much knowledge on forensics and criminal justice, aside from what I’ve seen on television shows, I am eager to learn more about the topic. Because I am shy, it will be a challenge to meet and make friends, but I will make sure to commence conversations and socialize with peers and advisors.
Thank you so much for making my trip and stay at the College of Saint Rose possible! Your donation will help me learn more about college before applying this fall. It will also give me a sense of what my interests are, and whether or not I am interested in studying criminal justice in college. This is an amazing opportunity, thank you!
