My passion is fashion design.
Fashion design became my passion when I was in the 5th grade. I remember going to school with belts pinned around my legs and fabric pinned onto my my hands like gloves. I don't remember where the influence to make clothes came from, but I just knew that I wanted to dress differently than the other kids and have clothes that i thought represented me the best. As I got older, I also realized that i didn't want to make clothes just for myself, I wanted people of every size, color, and gender to dress a way that made them feel confident and comfortable. So, in the winter of 8th grade, I put all the effort I could into teaching myself how to draw so I could make people more aware of my goal: to help make a more beautiful and confident world. Last school year, I was able to sell one of my designs to a senior who wanted to get a custom dress for her prom, and I was able to compete in a FCCLA star event.
Attending the FIT High School Saturday & Sunday Live - Fall Semester program will help me understand where I stand as a designer and what things I need to work on to achieve my goals. I haven't taken any type of formal studies in the area of fashion design, so this experience will really help me understand what I'm getting myself into and fill in the blanks of what I wasn't able to teach myself at home.
I just recently moved to New York from Texas, so I've never had opportunities like this. I'm ready to work hard and do what it takes to get me where I want to be.
"For Sasha's project, she did a beautiful art piece about gender roles. Her designs are incredibly distinctive and she has her own style. She is always designing clothes and her art work is all over the halls. Even without her name on it, I can tell which pieces are hers."
The classes I will be taking at my summer program are "Introduction to Fashion Industries" and "Develop an Eye for Styling." They were not the classes that I had picked at the beginning, but I'm really excited to take them. It's good to learn about as much as you can, so taking these classes will be beneficial for me. I thank you again for your contributions and will make them worthwhile.
