Nelao's Story

I have always had a passion for science, something that my father instilled within me. Both of us are scientifically minded - we tend to see things in black and white, and that every action must have a reaction. As I got older and we began to conduct experiments in school, I was drawn to the biology and anatomy experiments. I enjoyed seeing how the body interacts, and how you could solve a problem by knowing more about the relationship.

Being a part of the Envision NYLF Medicine program will help me gain further insight into how these experiments play out in the professional world. Science is a huge part of the medical profession, and I want to better understand how those different branches of science work for each doctor. With this experience, I can be confident in what to study in college, why also preparing me for college life. I will come into college with skills that I did not have before. Most importantly, I will spend my summer moving myself forward.

A Note from Ms. Rodriguez, Nelao's Counselor

Nelao has a lot of initiative and is a very passionate student. She came to Envision Academy this year and has worked very hard to have the grades she has. This will be the third high school she has attended but she has been successful at all. At Envision Academy we don't offer many elective courses but Nelao has taken fully advantage of the courses related to the field she's interested in we do offer and has excelled in them. She will benefit from this program because she will get the exposure she needs to the field in biology.

Envision NYLF Medicine

I had a really great time at my program. I was able to stay on the UC Berkeley campus. While at the program, I learned emergency medicine from a course taught at Stanford, I got CPR certified, and heard speeches from medical professionals and surgeons. This was a life changing experience, and I feel prepared to take on my future in medicine.

Envision NYLF this summer

I will be attending Envision NYLF Medicine program at UC Berkeley this summer. I am so excited to attend, and extremely grateful for the opportunity and funding that made this possible.

I wanted to attend this program for several reasons. Fist, attending a summer program will make my college applications a lot stronger. I also love to learn, so being able to go to a program like this will help feed my hunger for knowledge. I chose Medicine specifically because I want to study Biology and Medicine in college, and going to this program will help prepare me for both the community college class I'll be taking the fall, as well as my college classes.
