I have always had a passion for invention and engineering. Having grown up in the mecca of technological advances, I have experienced the impact of new tech, apps, and software first hand, both socially and geographically. These places where these advances were taking place are basically in my backyard. This past summer, I was fortunate enough to have landed an internship at Facebook. I was amazed at the number of blocks of code typed on a black computer monitor which were then used to advance world-connectivity in some way. Engineering is the form in which we can solve so much of the world’s problems, and I was watching those skills in action. I wanted those same skills so that one day I can contribute to solving the world’s problems while doing what I love.
I attend one of the smaller schools in my city, so computer science classes are not available at my school. This means that all of the coding I intend to learn must be self-taught, or part of outside-of-school courses. My passion for coding and engineering are strong, so I want to devote my summer to coding. The opportunity to learn somewhere as prestigious as Stanford is mind blowing, and I know that this summer program will give me the skills I need to further pursue my career goals. I will learn basics in CS and APCS, and dive deeper into coding, application of knowledge, and what career options are available for engineers. I will be around professionals on a real college campus. This will be such a huge opportunity for me.
Jesus is currently fundraising in order to be able to afford the Stanford Pre-Collegiate Summer Institute, which we believe represents a powerful step in his education and career.
His desire to succeed in school and life stems from a deep-seated belief that education is a tool for social mobility for himself and his family. As a result, Jesus has devoted himself completely to taking advantage of all opportunities that are available to him. The Stanford Pre-Collegiate Summer Institute represents one of those opportunities.
He is motivated to give back to his community, and he has found ways to effect change locally through a club he founded for Latino students. He has focused his club on direct action for parents (e.g., translation services at school functions) and the sharing of vital knowledge with the Latino community (e.g., debriefing how the election would impact immigrant and undocumented families). Beyond this interest, Jesus is also interested in cultivating skills that will better prepare him for his future career. Last summer, he participated in a summer program where he learned coding skills. Realizing that coding has the potential to transform his career and life, Jesus has since dedicated himself to learning new coding languages and applying his knowledge to the creation of an app, all independently. This self-directed learning exemplifies how Jesus explores his passion despite limited circumstances in his life.
As he looks forward to the future, Jesus is seeking more opportunities to enrich himself, and your financial support would enable him to spend the summer learning at Stanford. We appreciate your support and strongly believe that the power of this opportunity will be life-altering for Jesus and his community. Thank you!
Good luck Jesus. Have fun at Stanford :)
