My passion is marine science.
Attending the Ecology Project International: Costa Rica program will help expose me to a possible career involving both engineering and marine science. After taking an Oceanography course at Evergreen Community College, I realized that the ocean is delicate and our way of life is taking it’s toll on the organisms and habitats essential for marine life. Engineering is innovating in order to solve problems or creating efficient solutions for things already out there. I want to be an engineer that not only helps my community, but communities all over the world. By attending this program I will develop leadership and problem solving skills, as well as offer my persistence, positive mindset, and communication skills to create a healthy environment for everyone.
Esmeralda is looking for her place in this world. She wants to explore ecology as one of the areas of work that she could focus in during college and later in life. She is a very curious person and constantly looks for opportunities to learn and expand her worldview. Traveling to Costa Rica is a way for Esmeralda to achieve understanding of how she could as a person have a positive impact on the environment. She is set in making a career in engineering but she is looking for her purpose. Esmeralda wants to feel that her work is meaningful and is making a difference in our world. Therefore, I feel that her admittance to the Ecology Project International: Costa Rica program will further her mission and allow her to find meaning in her work as an engineer and citizen of our world.
Ecology Project International: Costa Rica was a growing experience where I was able to interact with the environment around me. I was able to work with the Mangroves, an endangered species of trees, and plant them in order to restore Mangrove forests. I was able to work with Green and Hawksbill Sea Turtles, ensuring they were both healthy and in physically good condition. Not only that, but I had the amazing opportunity of walking through the rain forest analyzing the different species of trees, the different adaptations, the insects, the birds, the mammals, and I even got to try one of the rain forest's unique sources of protein-termites! I was able to indulge in the Costa Rican culture while getting to know the various ways people live their daily lives. I learned so much this summer, and if I had the chance to go back and do it all over again I definitely would! Thank you for supporting me and giving me the opportunity to take advantage of this amazing summer experience!
Joining Ecology Project International in Costa Rica this summer will definitely be an experience to remember! I am so excited to begin expanding my areas of knowledge in the sciences while learning about the ecological differences around the world. I know that this program is a very valuable opportunity. I will be able to study an endangered reptile along with biodiverse ecosystems I have never heard about. I will gain valuable life skills along the way and meet students with whom I will be able to collaborate and share ideas about life and science.
The reason I chose this program is because as a future Engineer, my goals will be to promote and make a change in my community and communities all over the world. By attending Ecology Project International I will be able to pursue my passion for Engineering and explore possible careers involving innovation and marine science. I have loved the sciences since ninth grade, and I know that this program will help me gain firsthand experience with research and conservation work.
You're awesome Esme!! Keep setting your goals high. I know you will do amazing things.
