My passion is Medicine.
My interest in medicine is a personal one that has made me realize that I want to pursue a pre-medical degree in college and later become a pediatrician. Medicine has always been a part of my life, starting from my birth. Born with my esophagus disconnected from my stomach, I was hospitalized for 3 months while recuperating from the surgery that successfully gave me the ability to eat properly. However, this would the first of many surgeries that would make the hospital my second home. When I was 5, my right kidney was removed as a result of a horrible UTI. At age nine, I was diagnosed with scoliosis and was forced to wear a plastic brace until I was 13 and went through an 8 hour surgery that has left me with a scar down my back and titanium screws in my spine. I realized I wanted to give back to my community and give children hope in life despite their illness, similar to what the many surgeons and doctors have made me believe.
Brown University has always been my first choice university and have taken many campus tours. However, I believe that there is an energetic, vibrant, and more inviting atmosphere when one is actually living on campus for a while, rather than seeing the overview. Personally, I already know what I want to pursue in college, but the process of getting to my goal is unclear to me. Through the Brown Pre-College program, I hope to join the Introduction of Medicine program to get in depth of what courses I could potentially take in college and I would see the program as an opportunity to make sure that medicine is a field I would be gladly invested in for my entire life.
Karen has been setting the bar for students (even upperclassmen) through her work ethic and commitment to her education. She made the top GPA in her class as a Freshman and again as a Sophomore (above 4.0 both years). I believe she has more than made up for the two-and-a-half months she was out of school in eighth grade, but she seems determined to conquer all of the most challenging courses. As a Sophomore, she passed the AP World and AP Biology exams, and this year she is tackling AP Calculus, AP English, AP US history, and AP Spanish, as well as Honors Physics. But I guess that's why her nickname here is: the "machine."
Spending 2 weeks at Brown, in short, changed my life. From the minute I got onto campus, there was much excitement and many people who came from backgrounds that are not prevalent in my hometown. It was an interesting experience staying on Brown's campus, since I was given such freedom and responsibility. I was given the possibility to roam the campus and the city but also in charge of making sure I was completing my work. I really liked the fact that Brown made many meetings about different topics from sports on the main green to making bracelets and cards for sick children. Besides the small clubs, I also liked the weekend field trips but the city of Providence had many places to be explored. When I wasn't out exploring, I was reading and doing work from my course in psychology. The class itself was very successful in helping me talk to others by making us work in groups on daily quizzes and the end of the course project. I learned very fascinating topics such as the effects of drugs on the brain, addiction, and how cardiovascular diseases are impacted by the brain. Overall, by the end of the 2 weeks, I really did not want to leave campus because it left a powerful impact on me that has made me think about what I want out of college next year. Thank you again, so much for donating to my campaign, as these life changing experiences could not have been done without your help! Thank you so much!
Karen is a bright young woman and I think this would be a fantastic opportunity for her. The course she chose sounds like it is exactly up her alley.
