My passion is psychology.
My passion relates to an interest that I have in human behavioral habits. From a young age, I was always highly inquisitive about physical features and specific habits of different individuals that develop based on their gender or race association. I was always capable of noticing patterns with the behaviors of others so I was aware of my own flaws. I consistently baffled my Mom with the question, “Why do men avoid crying?” and similarly, “Why are females viewed as emotional?” She’d say “You’re always trying to find a way to understand something, aren’t you?” At the end of it all, there will still be a mystery as to why human behaviors are repeated in certain races and genders regardless of their current environment. Therefore, I realized this is a concept I would like to understand.
Nikea already demonstrates a great passion for psychology and commits and excels in her science courses. She is extremely dedicated to her work and most deserving of an opportunity to further expose herself to psychology and neuroscience. She has such a kind and respectful nature and works extremely well with others. While she is one to listen and soak up all the information she can gather and is great at following and utilizing advice given to her, she is also a leader. She's unafraid to speak up and take on challenges.
She will be most excited to be engaged in hands-on activities and get a realistic, inside view of this field. I have not come across a student as amazing as Nikea. I know this opportunity will be life changing for her. She craves this material and knowledge and it will only push her further to continue pursuing this passion throughout high school and especially in college. She has a hard-working family, but unfortunately, financial circumstances prevent them from being able to afford programs such as those that Wishbone has connections to. This will 100% be the greatest highlight and opportunity for Nikea and she will take full advantage and use it as fuel to further advance.
By venturing to Washington D.C. this summer to attend my Wishbone program, I was greeted with many welcoming faces of all races and cultural backgrounds and although I was not in my natural element of Brooklyn I was eager to form new bonds with people to enlighten my experience at the program.
Open attending the program I wasn't aware that there would be a leadership component and this requirement of the program was actually one of the most life-changing moments of my life because I was taught that “leadership equals relationship” and that meant that in order to be a true leader both in and outside of the program; I had to be open-minded to building connections with people that don't share the same ideals as myself. Additionally, within exploring the mind and its complex structures I was introduced to many different forms of psychological disorders such as: the Anti-social disorder and Anxiety while also having the opportunity to dissect a brain. I inherited the role of an actual psychologist in the final days of the program and I had the chance to diagnose a fellow counselor with a specific disorder with the help of their acting skills and written observations. I sat through college lectures about Neuroscience and I was often overwhelmed about the many parts of the brain but I always asked questions and pushed for a deeper understanding of the content.
I was so blessed to have this experience and the pleasure of exploring the historical area of Washington D.C. and I would not trade it for the world!
I am going to be participating in the NSLC Psychology and Neuroscience program this summer and I am more than thrilled to have this opportunity because I will be granted the pleasure of exploring the many facets of Psychology. I will essentially be deciding if this is the right major for me as I enter my final year in high school.
This program will allow me to learn more about the human psyche and the numerous thoughts behind our everyday actions. Since I am the type of person who wants to question almost everything I come into contact with, this program will give me the platform to learn more about the human body than what is taught in a classroom. I chose this program because I am confident that it would give the freedom to think "outside of the box" and not feel limited in expressing my passion for psychology that a variety of people like myself share. I anticipate that I'll have a new outlook on this field once I leave the program and I hope that my own ideas about the sub-sets of Psychology and Neuroscience are challenged throughout the program, so that I'm always putting my full potential forward.
