My passion is social justice.
Growing up, I didn’t notice a difference between people since I believed everyone was the same. Because I grew up so naive and oblivious to American society, finding out that I was a minority and that I was considered low in social status was very confusing to me. I couldn’t comprehend how people who all bleed red categorized themselves. Once I knew the truth, I couldn't sit on the side lines and live my life ignoring the truth in our world. Sadly, the truth is I am a minority and I will not get the same opportunities as a wealthy white person, but that doesn't mean I won’t work hard to accomplish everything I set my mind to. Social justice is my passion because it allows me to fight for the underdogs. Advocating for the ones that don’t have a voice in our society helps me contribute to equality and overall for peace worldwide.
Summer @ Brown, focusing on CSI and forensics, will help me explore my passion for social justice. Many minorities each year are falsely imprisoned due to errors in genetic evidence. I've seen evidence of this through the Innocence Project and their commitment to correcting wrongful convictions. The work that they do is inspiring to me and makes me excited to be a part of this program. The program will teach me the basics in how to process DNA and the proper steps to find evidence in a case. This will set me up for a potential career in forensics, which will help me further push my passion for social justice and my love for science. Summer @ Brown will take me a step further in my lifelong goal of equality among all.
Annabella has pursued and developed her passion for social justice through her curiosity, dedication and excellence throughout her years in school. Annabella is one of the most inquisitive students I know. Her continuous questioning of society and the status quo have fostered a deep curiosity for how systems are created, maintained and reinforced in America and the world. Given that Annabella is only a 10th grader, she has not yet been eligible for the social justice elective at our school. Despite this, her writing and participation in class reveals her belief in social equity and equality. Her sense of justice is much more developed than most of her peers and she continues to nurture this daily.
My own high school experience at a Summer@Brown program affords me special knowledge about just how amazing Annabella's experience will be. As a student in the top 10% of our school, I have no doubt that she will excel in this program and inspire other students with her passion and critical thinking. I know that she will come back to our community with a different way of evaluating social justice and others will benefit from her experience.
Coming to Brown, I was scared about the course load and about making friends, but that all changed after spending a incredible week there . My roomie became my best friend , even though we came from different backgrounds. The forensic science was such an amazing course where I could explore my passion for social justice. I learned in that week that social justice is still a passion of mine but that I might not want to do forensic science. It's still a option but I would like to keep exploring other ways to engage my passions. Overall the homework was tedious and did take some time to do. However I really enjoyed the activities Brown had for me because they helped me meet other Brown students, current Brown students, and others. I am grateful that I went to this program and I want to thank everyone who helped me get there.
