I have many passions: music, human behavior, science, and helping others. It is difficult to narrow this down to one, but I find the key concept that binds all my passions together is education. To me, education is not limited to rigorous math and English courses, nor is it that the knowledge learned in class should remain stuck on a notebook to never be opened again. Education is about knowing when one has learned and being able to apply that knowledge in life, an ongoing process in which we can challenge ourselves, realizing what we do know and do not know.
To me, education speaks about self-growth, respect, creativity, and courage. When I learn about psychology, science, or history, I feel a step closer to self-actualization. I feel as if learning is a network of train tracks, moving forward, taking me to various unexpected and exciting paths. It gives me motivation and a refreshing sense optimism in hope that I could perhaps make a difference in my community and into future generations.
I have always been interested in acting and performing, but I have always found myself being discouraged by lack of resources and family support. Becoming a professional actor seems unrealistic, so I easily gave up discovering more about acting even when I still had a curiosity. Being able to step into the struggles and joys of a character other than yourself fascinates me. I see acting as a way of learning about oneself through another person’s perspective. I selected the California’s Actors Workshop, because it is an opportunity to challenge myself further and grow as a person in a new and different environment. This program will provide me a rare opportunity to discover a branch of knowledge and expression I have always been curious about.
I believe that what sets the California’s Actors Workshop apart from the other programs that focus on the same subject is its instructors, location, and duration. I believe that your instructors are very qualified and know what they are doing. It is proven with the way they will be running the program, as they will be filming our development through the duration. This three-week program will be held in the prestigious Stanford Campus and I feel like living in a campus of a praised university will help me get an understanding of the type of college that fits me. The three-week span is also very important because in this time I will be able to meet and connect with new people, making valuable life experiences.
During her freshman year, Citlalli ran for class president. She asked me if I would help her with her speech. When I questioned her about her interest in the position, she told me about her desire to represent her classmates and do something positive for her classmates. While many are interested in how this will look on a college application, Citalli had a genuine interest in her classmates. As I talk to her about the future and what her plans are she invariably talks about a profession where she can help others and provide leadership that is so desperately lacking. I think what would be most beneficial would be the connection she will establish with other people. The area where our school is located is relatively insular although only thirty miles from San Francisco. I think connecting Citlalli with intelligent and thoughtful instructors and peers would allow her to see what exists outside of her immediate confines. Also, I think the opportunity to mimic dorm life and live on a college campus would be extremely beneficial. Getting a trial run and preliminary exposure would be something she will never forget and an experience that will certainly inform her decisions about college. This would certainly allow her to test her comfort levels. There are certain people one cannot wait to meet in ten to fifteen years to see how the individual is one the other side of adolescence--what the individual becomes. I am quite interested to see what she becomes.
I am thrilled to know that I have the opportunity to attend the California Actors Workshop during this summer. I am looking forward with excitement to learn much more about the mysterious world of acting that has always sparked a curiosity in me. I find myself very eager to meet people with various backgrounds that will take part in the program, as well as living in a different environment such as a university campus. Though it is nerve-wracking to attend an acting camp when I have not had any experience with acting whatsoever, I am determined to apply myself fully in order to learn and grow as much as possible and make the best out of this experience. It will be challenging living with people that I have never met before, but I plan on pushing myself through this challenge to get involved and have a more enjoyable and memorable experience.
Thank you very much for your generosity. I really appreciate your interest in supporting me to explore new paths and gain new valuable experiences through California Actors Workshop. With your support I will be able to develop new skills for my passion of the arts. Being able to learn about acting has always been a dream for me and with your help I have gotten closer to this dream. Through this new experience I will be able to learn more about myself and hopefully be able to apply it in an activity beneficial to my community. Thank you for your remarkable support!
