My passion is software engineering.
After being introduced to computer science by my robotics teacher, I applied and got accepted to Girls Who Code. I spent a summer learning what exactly computer science is and how important it is for women to get involved in the male dominated field. This sparked a love for technology that I never thought I had in me and drove me to seek more opportunities. Seeing as technology is now being introduced into every aspect of life, I've found technology to be a flexible work of art that could be created by anyone willing to work to make their ideas a reality. I want to get more involved in software engineering and then teach others by bringing my findings back to my community.
Attending BlueStamp Engineering will help me continue to advocate to make the tech world a more respected place for women as well as strengthen my understanding of what it means to be a woman in technology. As a young woman starting out in tech, this is a incredible opportunity to showcase my potential and the potential of all future leaders.
"I see Jenny displaying passion, self-motivation, and ambition when it comes to anything related to coding. Though she is a very capable and bright student, she really shines when it comes to coding-related projects. In my advisory, for example, she prepared and delivered a short lesson teaching her fellow peers how to code using Scratch. Jenny did a great job checking in with each group, getting them set up with a project that would interest them, and troubleshooting when they got stuck.
Jenny has a clear interest in technology, specifically programming, but she has had limited access to resources to help her develop this interest and skill. I believe that the BlueStamp Engineering program would be an excellent opportunity for her to gain more experience and to branch out of Oakland."
This summer, I was exposed to much more than a simple engineering program. I met many interesting and accomplished people and learned that no one's success came out of a straight, easy path and obstacles are so frequent that they are almost like a right of passage. Through my experience at BlueStamp, I learned that there is no use in sitting around upset that your project seems like a complete failure, but instead there's new opportunity and room to grow. This program also served as a metaphor for how to address many other challenges in life and illustrated that regardless of how much people want to help you it's on you to create that change for yourself and keep yourself moving forward.
Of course, I also learned a ton technically and accomplished a project I believed I was in no way capable of. It was an incredible experience being able to identify a problem, research solutions, then narrow down the necessary steps to be able to fix the problem. Overall, it was much more than I expected and I am incredibly thankful to all that helped get me here and rewarded me with an experience that I will carry on throughout the rest of my journey and into the career of my choice. I also definitely want to thank Wishbone for the consistent follow-ups and being there throughout the whole experience, truly unforgettable.
BlueStamp Engineering posted an awesome update about what Jenny's been up to this summer. The update includes videos and written testimony -- check it out below!

Monday will be my first day at BlueStamp engineering camp, and I'm really excited to see what I can engineer. I am also really nervous because I don't know what to expect or how prepared I am for this big project. At camp, I am planning on building a voice-activated solar powered speaker which would require an arduino, solar panel, and a speaker. Hopefully, I will grow along with my project and it will be a fun challenge to overcome this summer! Thank you so much for sending me to this program!
