My passion is Medicine.
Last summer, I discovered Grey’s Anatomy on a Sunday afternoon, and slowly began idolizing the way Arizona Robinson did her job. The way she gave up her whole daily lifestyle to save little kids in Africa because her passion for medicine was stronger than anything. I want to be just like that. My passion for medicine is reaching that point where I would leave where I am if that meant I would be able to study medicine. I continued to be mesmerized by Arizona. I made flashcards about things I had no idea the definition of, but that’s exactly why I made them. Soon enough, I knew procedures that my pediatrician was performing on me from start to finish.
By attending the National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine, I will be living my dream of seeing up close procedures on medicine. In this program, I will develop the skill to work through long exhausting hours, but this is exactly what I need to be exposed to, and it is exactly what I want to do. In the future, when I start working in a hospital I would have already had a glimpse of what the medical field is, and most likely be ahead of the game. With this kind of exposure, I would be achieving my dream.
As an educator I have worked with hundreds of children over the past nine years. There are so many different aspects that make young adults so wonderful to work with, and among the characteristics that I hold in highest esteem are thoughtfulness, curiosity, and perseverance. Five years ago I was asked to open the June leadership retreat for Uncommon with a speech that represented the retreat's theme of "Write the future." In preparation for my speech I asked several students to share how my school helped them write their futures. I picked Ashley's words to share that day. She spoke of how when entering 5th grade she didn't have confidence in herself and she didn't know the names of any colleges. She hadn't felt successful in school in part because academics were a challenge for her and she didn't have many experiences being encouraged to try, fail, try again until she succeeded before she came to Williamsburg Collegiate Charter School. But soon she was able to answer the question, "What are you going to do when you grow up?" with confidence and assertion. As a 5th grader, Ashely knew that she was going to college and she knew that she wanted to become a doctor.
Hope you're loving HS, Ashley. And that you have an amazing time this summer!
To help and encourage a young motivated person to achieve her heart's desire.
