My passion is Marine Biology.
I was enrolled in an after school program in 5th grade. We decided to head on a trip to the beach. The beach has been one of my favorite places to go to when I have nothing to do. We got there and something caught my attention. A jellyfish lay there motionless. I ran to it and it sparked a curiosity in me to know more about it. I wanted to know what other creatures lived in the mysterious sea. As soon as I got home, I went to the library to learn more about it. I knew that this was the beginning to my passion for the wonders of the sea.
California is pretty amazing but does not have all of the nature’s beauty like Costa Rica. Costa Rica has jungles, volcanoes, and beaches that I really would like to explore. Before I hadn’t been given the opportunity to visit another country but now I am given the opportunity. I know this is my chance to explore the world, meet new people, and grow on my passion. I want to be able to have fun and explore, while doing what I love.
"Jenn is constantly looking to move outside of her comfort zone and to pursue opportunities that will take her to the next level. This program is a perfect fit for Jenn, because she has not had many opportunities-- especially at our school-- to pursue her interest in marine biology. Being in a very physically different location and meeting students who are from all walks of life is the perfect opportunity for a student like Jenn to take her academic, social, and professional interests to the next level. I think she would definitely benefit from and be positively challenged by the caliber of students who would attend this program."
My beautiful summer started with my trip to my summer program. This was my first time going on a plane and it was scary, but I had met friends who were there to calm me down. I felt supported throughout the whole trip. Upon arriving, we met our first instructor from Costa Rica, Stanley, and he welcomed us to a new country with open arms. We started to interact more with people who came from different parts of the U.S., who were on the course with us. I met my wonderful friends one by one. Nobody really knew each other which made the trip so much better because we got to form a tight bond from scratch. At first, it was hard because our phones were collected, but now looking back, I am grateful because it made me realize how awesome the sights, people, and culture are.
During the trip, I felt weird because I was still processing the fact that I was in another country. Other than that, I was having the time if my life. Resting on a hammock while drinking a coconut looking at the beach, how relaxing. Then, at night time came the Turtle Patrol. We were divided into groups and had to walk on the beach for four hours! We had to look for any turtles looking to lay their eggs. Unfortunately, our group didn't get to see any turtles, but walking for hours at night on the beach can make tight friendships. When we were at the reserve, the best part was getting to play a game of volleyball with the young children of Costa Rica.
Towards the end of the trip, we all started to feel a bit down because we would all be separated. It was hard to process, it's weird how strangers became a family. This trip made me realize that I love traveling and meeting people that are different from me. Once again, I would love to thank everyone who helped me out to make this trip possible. You changed my life for the better!
These past few weeks have been dedicated to my preparation for my trip. Summer is about to begin and I'm very excited because I know it's about to be the best one. It's my first time out of the country and I'm nervous, but anxious to go. Ever since I discovered my passion, I knew I wanted to do it while traveling. With this summer program, I get to travel and do what I love. I am so thankful for everyone who helped me get here, the school, Wishbone, my advocate, my donors, my parents, and my summer program.
Your passion is inspiring! Here's to pursuing your dream and doing what you love :)
Go Jenn!
Costa Rica sounds awesome! And although I was never very good at or really interested in biology (or chemistry or physics) I hope you find the cure for shark cancer. As my professor once told me, do well and do good. Good luck!!!
Good luck! - from a biologist
Best of luck to you on your journey to explore the world and all its beauty :)
