My passion is science.
My love for science grew during my freshman year. My favorite class was biology, not only because my teacher was excellent at making class interesting, but because there is so much to discover in the science field. New things about the world are coming out every single day, and I would love to have the opportunity to work in a field that is constantly growing. With science, there are no limitations on what you can and cannot do.
Ever since the fifth grade, I knew Emory was an excellent college. Attending the Emory Pre-College Program will allow me to hear new things about how to prepare myself for college.
"From the beginning of Myalana's participation in my biology class it was clear that she was a strong student. What really makes Myalana stand out, however, is her deep devotion to helping others. I can honestly say that in my six years of teaching I have never experienced a peer tutor as dedicated, passionate, or patient as Myalana.
Myalana is an excellent candidate for the Emory University Pre-College Program. She is independent and level-headed and will have no problem embracing the new experience of living away from home and diving into the culture of a new city. In addition, Myalana is incredibly mature for her age and would take advantage of all that the program and Atlanta have to offer. I am confident that Myalana will succeed in college no matter what, but I believe that this experience will put her on a path for success much earlier."
My experience at Emory can't be summed up in one word. It was awesome, fun, eye-opening and interesting. I learned a lot about myself since I had no family holding my hand. I chose a class which only had eight students. Some friends and I participated in capture the flag, the talent show, and games with other pre-college students. The class atmosphere was extremely intimate; we got to know each other's vulnerabilities and helped each other deal with them. I met the other Emory Wishbone student who is from Brooklyn (Jendyi). I also met Mercedes who goes to the Achievement First in New Haven Connecticut. Additionally, I met Tatyana from Minneapolis and Shyleah from Atlanta. When you are stuck finding your way in a new city in college, your friends become like family. I talk to my class often and my friends everyday. I am so thankful for Wishbone, Uncommon schools, and family friends for supporting me on this journey.
I am so excited to be going to Emory in a few days. I have all my clothes packed and am almost finished with the assigned reading. I am a little bit scared to take a flight by myself. However, I know that it will only be a two hour flight and not as bad as I think. I am really excited to stay on campus and meet a lot of new people. I can't wait to make friends I will have for a lifetime.
Myalana is truly one of the most deserving students I have ever taught! You will soar at this program Myalana!
