My passion is social activism.
This became my passion due to what I have observed in my surroundings. I have witnessed a lot of people address certain political, economic, and social issues on a mundane level, but have never fought to change them. This year, I helped my school with the #MoreThanMyColor Poetry Open Mic in response to the events in Ferguson, Staten Island, and Brooklyn, and I am also leading the Black History Month celebration. This passion is what drives me to want to study Political Science and African/African-American Studies.
I am interested in the Public Speaking Institute's active construction of knowledge, synthesizing, analyzing, and utilizing new information. As I mentioned previously, social media provides me with a lot of information, but I would like to learn how to use it effectively in order to get my point across about the changes that need to be made in the world.
"Junise participates in spoken word, both on her own time and in the school's Spoken Word Club, and she is very driven when it comes to finding ways to better express and communicate her ideas. She is relentless in her pursuit of feedback, whether it's for an essay or an email she's writing, and would take full advantage of the Public Speaking Institute. Junise already feels comfortable talking in front of people, but is very eager to learn what separates good public speakers from great ones, and how she can incorporate their rhetorical moves into her own social activism."
I give thanks to all of you for allowing me to have this wonderful experience! Without your love and support, I wouldn't have been able to receive the great opportunity of attending the Public Speaking Institute. It did in fact get challenging at times, but I managed to pull through and learned A LOT throughout the course of that one week alone. Not only did I become a better public speaker, but I also learned how to skillfully debate in both a competitive and more casual setting.
I also got the chance to visit Tufts University (where the program was held), and got to see what the campus looks and feels like. This is a school that I now intend on applying to this fall.
Not only that, but I've met some amazing people and made some lifelong friends!
Thank you all for everything! Couldn't have done this without you!
This summer, I will be attending the Public Speaking Institute at Tufts University! I chose the Public Speaking Institute for multiple reasons, the first one being my passion for social activism. As I have said before, this became my passion due to what I have observed in my surroundings. I have witnessed many attempts to address the social, political, and economic issues of the day on social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, without seeing any change. I feel as though the Public Speaking Institute will make me a much stronger and more effective speaker. I am interested in the Public Speaking Institute's active construction of knowledge, synthesizing, analyzing, and utilizing new information. As I mentioned previously, social media provides me with a lot of information, but I would like to learn how to use it effectively in order to get my point across about the changes that need to be made in the world.
All the best!
So proud of you! Have a wonderful time.
