Kenneth's Story

My passion is fashion.

I discovered my love for fashion at the age of seven. I would go behind my mom's back and cut jeans to visualize the design I wanted to see at fashion show. As a young teen living in NYC, everywhere you go it's like you're walking on a runway at a fashion show. I receive my ideas from fashion magazines such as "Vogue" and "GQ." One of the role models I look up to in the fashion world is Olivier Rousteing, a young French designer who's the executive director at Balmain. Rousteing put a rare, unique style into his collections. Fashion is a way I can express myself because it brings out the joy in me.

Attending Parsons Summer Intensive Studies will help develop my passion because it will teach me a curriculum about fashion design. It would put me an environment that will influence me to be creative based on the feedback of my peers and the instructors. This will elevate me to achieve my dream.

A Note from Ms. Tehrani, Kenneth's Teacher

"Through familiarizing myself with Wishbone's mission and Parson's Pre-College Academy program, I am aware that your institutions seek adolescents who embody the values and traits of a leader. It is for this reason that I am certain that Kenneth would be an asset to your organizations. It is true that leadership calls for delegation, but a truly effective leader sets a precedent by the way he carries himself through life. Kenneth’s commitment to his personal growth and success serves as a positive influence to those around him; he is a role model."

Great summer at Parsons

This summer I attended Parsons Summer Intensive Studies. I participated in a fashion exploration in sewing and construction class. The class is hands-on with activities. I learned about designing, dropping, darts, pattern making, hand sewing, and industrial machine sewing. We made our visual ideas go from 2D to 3D, sketching to fabricating. It was amazing because I felt like an actual director, like Marc Jacobs when he was working at Louis Vuitton. On the second day of class we took a trip to the fabrics stores to get the feel of how we will buy fabrics for our final project. On the last day of class, my teacher Ms. Maria took us on a class trip to the Theory office. We toured around the office and met the founder, Andrew Rosen. Mr. Rosen is a nice guy. He asked me where was I from and who was my favorite designer. When he asked me I was kind of starstruck. Before we left, we had a chance to take a class picture with him.

I had a chance to make two good friends. One's name Jeffrey Tang, he’s from California and enrolling in 12th grade. Another amazing friend I met's name is Bingchin Liu, but we just called him Vincent. He’s an exchange student from Beijing, China. He's going to 12th grade at a school in Chicago. I met Vincent because we were both in the same fashion class: sewing and construction. We started to become friends when I asked him how he got his “Yeezy” (the Kanye West Adidas sneaker) because it was so hard to get. We exchanged words about fashion. Later, on the same day, he invited me to come upstairs to his dorm to meet his roommate Jeffrey. When I met Jeffrey he was hype and energetic. We all three have the dream of pursuing fashion and attending Parsons. Jeffrey and Vincent have positive vibes, and it's always fun when I’m around them. I’m happy that I attended Summer Intensive at Parsons because it was a great experience.

Excited for fashion and a fun summer at Parsons

This summer I will be attending Parsons Summer Intensive Studies. I will be participating in a fashion exploration in sewing and construction class. I will learn the task of designing and exceptionally making objects out of soft materials. There will be variations of construction techniques, from hand to machines, from sewing to knitting, crouching, draping, and pattern making.

I chose this program because I felt the activities that will be practiced in class will make me grow as a person who has interest in fashion and who wants to become a fashion designer of his own house. The activities that will be going on in class sound fascinating. I want to be creative and be open-minded about selecting themes for a for a specific project I'm doing. I hope to meet successful alumni, such as Marc Jacobs, Donna Karen, Tom Ford, and Alexander Wang, so they can teach us how to pursue our careers and the everyday things that go on in the fashion world.
