My passion for medicine is influenced by the incredible things that medicine does for people and the new interesting discoveries that medicine reveals. I get excited about medicine because I always gain new knowledge when I’m taking on tasks that involve medicine. Also, I get excited about medicine because I have been in a hospital setting plenty of times and I’m intrigued by the processes going on and the different situations that the doctors handle. When I’m pursuing my passion, I feel overwhelmed by excitement and a feeling of focus because I’m all ready to learn something or perform well at a task that assigned to me.
Devaughn is an immensely special young man who is off to great places. He has over a 4.0 GPA, plays varsity sports, and takes our school's most rigorous courseload. He will no doubt attend a private university when he graduates from KIPP-NYC College Prep, and when he does, he will be around a much more diverse group of students than he is accustomed to. In that setting, it might be hard for Devaughn to keep his head on straight and understand how talented he is, when suddenly he is around a much more talented student body. I think that giving him as much experience as possible in diverse settings and in high-intensity settings is important. It will help prepare him for the leadership for which he is destined.
This program, Discover Hopkins, has encouraged me even more to attend John Hopkins University. I was able to experience campus life, academic work and social life. John Hopkins has always been a dream college of mine since the day I decided to pursue medicine as a career. The program only made me want to commit more to getting into the college and pursue my medical dreams there. I would recommend this program to a friend because within my two weeks at the program, I created a family with my fellow Discover Hopkins participants and the residential counselors. The experience gives you the feel of actual college life and is very beneficial. I enjoyed meeting new people from different places and forming new bonds and friendships as well as learning about medicine in a very prestigious school.
Below is a collage of a bunch of photos from the John Hopkins artifacts museum. I took a humanity class on the history of the hospital. We attended the museum in order to look at ancient ways of medical procedures like burial. We learned about Hippocrates four humors and therapeutic nihilism. We had trips everyday and that was our first trip on our first day of class. I am excited for more exploring at Discover Hopkins!
The idea of attending this program gives me a feeling of joy. I’m most excited about the fact that this is an opportunity for me to learn more about the medical field because medicine is my passion and I yearn to receive more information about the topic. I always want to expand my knowledge about medicine. This is also an opportunity for me to venture further in my journey to becoming a surgeon since the program allows me to decide if Hopkins is a future school that I want to attend. I have set goals for myself while I attend. One goal is to learn new information about medicine that will advance me to reaching my dream career. Another goal is to create new connections in the medical field that will benefit me by giving me tips to succeed and giving me more opportunities to expand my knowledge. The final goal is to learn more about Johns Hopkins because there is a possibility that I want to attend the school for college and this could help me plan my future. An obstacle I may face is that I’m reserved and aloof so I may struggle making friends and being interactive. My method to overcome this is by being open-minded, looking approachable and encouraging interactions.
Thank you for your donations. I appreciate you generous efforts to help me reach my dream. I'm very thankful for your support. Your donations will place me one step closer to becoming a surgeon and attending John Hopkins. I hope my excessive gratitude is expressed in this letter. Once again, thank you again for giving me the opportunity to succeed in attending an intensive medical program. You are allowing me to have new experiences with the medical field. You have helped me in a colossal way. Thank you.
