My passion is mental health.
I first discovered that I was passionate about mental health when I reached adolescence. There was a time in my life I had reached when I believed that nothing could fix the situation. I blocked and pushed every person out and let my mental health crumble away. That all changed when my family made the choice to get me the help I needed. Therapy and sessions with counselors did me well because I was then aware of my own actions and feelings to certain situations and I took control of my life again. To this day though there is that curiosity in me that wants to know what happens in the brain that makes people react the way they react to certain situations.
Attending this amazing program will enable me to get a head start for my future career, a Correctional Treatment Specialist. This career requires you to be able to analyze an inmate's psychological tendencies, intelligence levels, and past behaviors, and then create a plan for rehabilitation. I already have my own personal experiences with mental health concerns. At this point in my life, I want to know the scientific aspects of mental health, to gain a better understanding of the brain and how it works. This program will give me the ability to do hands on research that will broaden my comprehension in the mental health field, giving me a greater advantage once I go into college.
Karinna is an excellent candidate for the Washington University in St. Louis Philosophy, Neuroscience and Psychology Institute. Both of Karinna's parents have been incarcerated for long periods of time. This has inspired her curiosity regarding mental health, specifically as it pertains to the rehabilitation of inmates. Because her passion is rooted in such a personal experience, I know she will be thoroughly engaged in the program.
My time spent in St. Louis was amazing. I met so many people from different states, and even from out of the country like Nigeria and Korea. I made long lasting friendships with a few great individuals, but most of all I learned so much. I got to explore different regions of the brain and their purpose and how they contribute to our daily functions. I also got the chance to conduct ongoing research with different mental diseases. I found that the most interesting because I could relate back to my families history of mental diseases, which answered many questions I had.
I also got the chance to learn a lot about philosophy and tie everything I learned within those two weeks and write a paper about my personal philosophy and what I perceive as The Good. Although we had class from 9am- 12pm and then again from 1:15 to 4:30, I got to hang out with friends and enjoy the campus life and explore St. Louis. Some outings we went on were to the City Museum (an adult playground built inside a warehouse), Six Flags, Saint Louis Arch, few museums and The Loop. Overall, I learned that I am ready to conquer the independence that comes with being a college student. Thank you for contributing to my future.
With much gratitude,
Karinna
