My passion is softball.
The big field of grass, the dirt, nerves, sweat, instincts, and my team, next to me through it all. Every time I step onto that diamond field, it’s like I don’t have a worry in the world. Softball is my passion and I’ve poured blood, sweat, and tears to continue to play the game I love. I’ve torn a meniscus and have broken my right hand during competitions, but that didn’t stop me from playing. I wasn't going to let recoverable injuries take away my happiness.
I started playing in 6th grade because my parents forced me into it; they preferred to have me playing a sport than staying at home doing nothing. I played my best so that I could impress my parents after each game. I played for them. Then, somewhere along the way, I fell in love with the sport.
It became my passion, and I began playing for myself. Softball gives me a purpose in life, and every time I get on that field I am driven to succeed and reach my goal of continuing to play college ball. Getting this opportunity to meet new people, build friendships, and play alongside girls who are just as passionate about softball as I am is an amazing feeling.
"Vivian is a student who is prepared and eager for the challenges of higher education. Her favorable traits—concern for others, intrinsic motivation, integrity, initiative, and creativity—coupled with her academic proficiency help to create a student who will excel in all aspects of life.
Within the boundaries of the neighborhood, Vivian has had to scrape for opportunities and has had to rely on ingenuity to overcome the lack of resources. Attending Nike Softball Camp will give Vivian the opportunity to follow her interests and passions. It feels great to know that Vivian will have the chance to move beyond the walls of the community."
My softball camp took place in UC Santa Barbara. We would practice 6 hours a day minimum. One of the main things we focused on was footwork. In other words, we learned the correct way to stand on the bag so that we don't get hurt and so that we have a better chance at catching the ball and making a tag. We would also do many scrimmages with each other and we learned how to throw the ball faster. Lastly, we focused on batting and how to run the bases quicker.
Even though there were many younger kids, I still learned things. For one, I learned the footwork done at short stop and second base. I also learned what I need to fix on my batting, that way if they throw me an outside pitch I will get right on the ball and hit it far. As for the people in the camp, most of them were amazing and fun to be around with. The coaches there were incredible and humble for the most part. The ones I still keep in contact with are my roommates. I had so much fun with them and we all got along with each other right away.
I am really looking forward to attending the Softball Nike Camp at UC Santa Barbara. This Nike Softball Camp will teach me new skills to put to use on the field. I will be learning new ways to improve my batting, fielding, and throwing.
I chose to attend this program because softball is a passion of mine that I want to keep improving my skills in. I know I still have a lot to learn and through this camp I am hoping it will bring me a step closer in improving those skills. I also want to take the new skills and techniques I will be learning back to Roosevelt. I want to keep growing as a player, and I am hoping that one day I will be able to get the opportunity to play softball in college. What I am looking forward to the most is meeting new people from different places. I am looking forward to creating new bonds and new experiences with new people that I will cherish for years. Another thing I am looking forward to is dorming at UC Santa Barbara and getting to see the campus for the first time. I know it will be a beautiful campus to see and I can’t wait to explore UC Santa Barbara.
I think this will be an amazing experience that I will remember forever. Not many people get this opportunity, so I am very lucky to be a part of the Softball Nike Camp, and I would like to thank you once again for making the camp possible for me.
Vivian, I don't know you but I love your commitment and courage. Keep up the good work and God Bless you! The Alvarez Family

Hi Vivian,
hope this helps and you can enjoy going to softball camp.
I wanted to help because just as Vivian in my high school years I was fortunate to meet generous people such as teacher Jeff Matsumura that really do care for the young and encourage them to better themselves
