My passion is learning.
Throughout my life, I have always had a great hunger for knowledge. As a child, I had a severe speech-language impediment and learning disability. However, I did not let that take control nor define my life or academic endeavors. At the age of six, my mom and I moved to New Jersey from Puerto Rico. When I first came, I did not speak English, therefore adding another obstacle to overcome. Driven by my passion for learning, I continue to improve and persevere through my adversities to achieve greatness.
By attending Summer at Brown, I can develop my passion for knowledge, specifically in my favorite fields: mathematics and science. Physics explains all of the marvelous things that we experience in our daily lives and take for granted. Though I've only taken an introduction to physics, this course sparked a desire to explore this amazing field.
"Xaymara is a good candidate for Summer at Brown because of her passion for physics, which she took in the ninth grade. While her peers were struggling with even the basic concepts, she was excelling, always asking questions about why things worked the way they did and trying to get even more information out of an already-jam-packed course.
Xaymara will benefit from participating in this program because she has the brains, the dedication, the enthusiasm for learning, and the support of a great academic community. It would be a tragedy to keep a bright, young woman of color from the opportunity to continue the hard work she's always done just because she comes from a low-income community."
Staying at Brown University has been one of the most amazing experiences in my life. I will never forget the marvelous moments I had while I was at Brown University. I will never forget my awesome roommate, who is from Peru but lives in Panama. We both shared the same love for music, which automatically made us close friends. I will never forget going to the Rock (the Rockefeller Library) with my friend who is from Mississippi right after class to review what we learned. Most importantly, I will never forget the daily walks at Thayer Street where there is everything that you need to survive in college: Starbucks, sushi restaurants, CVS, the bookstore, and café shops. I will never forget all the time spent laughing and smiling with my friends while I was at Brown. It has been a couple of days since I've returned from Brown University. I miss my lovely friends. I miss taking my interesting course, Abnormal Child and Adolescent Psychology. I know previously, I stated that I wanted to take a STEM related course. However, I this course helped me know more about myself and the people around me since I am diagnosed with anxiety disorder. This course has inspired me to help my friends and my community who need help and are not being heard. Therefore, I am thinking of creating a support club at my school to help people who want to be heard and let other students help each other. With the knowledge that I have, I want to help the people around me so I can create a stronger community. I want to help my peers and show them that they are not alone. Because of this program, I now know what I am capable of doing. I created bonds with amazing friends. Because of what I've learned at Brown University, I can take my knowledge and use it to make my community much stronger. Thank you Wishbone for accepting me into this incredible program. And thank you to everyone who supported and donated money to the fundraiser. I am so grateful that I took this opportunity to join the Wishbone program. Because of this incredible opportunity, I am more motivated to work hard and go to college.
In a couple days, I will go to Rhode Island to spend two weeks at Brown University. I am both extremely excited and nervous. I am excited because I will begin to experience life as a college student. However, I am nervous because I have never done this before. On the other hand, thinking about this scenario fills me with excitement. This opportunity will prepare me for my future journey as an independent young adult. Therefore, I know I will not be by myself at Brown University. I am looking forward to creating strong bonds with people who are also feeling alone and nervous at Brown University. Every experience is better when one has the help and support of others. Finally, I would like to recognize and extend my gratitude to the people that contributed to my fundraiser. Without them, this amazing opportunity would not have been possible. I would like to thank the people who trusted in me and believe that I can achieve my dreams. Thank you for believing in me!! Because of my supporters, I feel confident and ready to go to Brown University!!
