My passion is pushing myself beyond both my physical and mental limits.
My life has not been easy. I have grown up in a "bad" neighborhood and my family is living paycheck to paycheck. I used to think that I didn't have any advantages in my life, which made me think that maybe I shouldn't even bother reaching for my goals. However, there have been numerous occasions, from pushing myself during a cross-country meet, to succeeding in higher-level academic courses, where I have come to realize that I am able to achieve more than I initially thought I could. For instance, during a cross country race this season when I really thought I wouldn't be as good as all the other experienced racers, I tried my hardest and managed to finish in the top 10. I realized that while undergoing these challenges, I became stronger as a person. I now firmly believe that by continuously pushing myself I can reach my full potential in every aspect of life.
I believe that by attending Nike Cross Country Camp of Champions I will embrace all the opportunities and challenges that this program has to offer. Venturing out of my comfort zone with complete strangers will not only teach me the value of my own self-worth, but the self-worth of others as well. Additionally, this camp will assist me in taking both my mind and body to places I could have never imagined. I see this program as a chance to grow as a runner and as a person, while motivating me to bring that mindset into my own community. I plan to bring this positive mindset into my own community by having others feed off of my positive energy and taking what I learn from the camp to help everyone in my cross country team improve as runners.
"I have known Jonathan for about 4 months. During this time, I have served as his Academic Leadership teacher. Additionally, I have worked with Jonathan outside of the classroom through leadership and service opportunities. Jonathan is an incredibly hardworking student who always asks questions and pushes my thinking as a teacher. One of my favorite parts of working with Jonathan is that he constantly keeps me on my toes. Each day, he encourages me to think more deeply about the social justice topics we cover in the Academic Leadership course.
"Jonathan has a strong passion for Cross Country. This year, he showed leadership as a freshman on the team, attending each practice and working hard to improve himself each day. I believe Jonathan makes a great candidate for the Nike camp because he will take all he learns and bring it back to the Leadership Public Schools team. Through talking with Jonathan, I also know that he looks forward to developing authentic friendships with people outside of his school and community."
I had such an amazing time at Stanford Cross Country Camp. Arriving on to campus and seeing all the other high school students who shared a common interest for running was incredible. Once everyone was assigned to their dorm and their camp groups, we headed to the track to get ready for our first run of the week. I won’t forget how exhausted I was after that first run. I was not used to running for more than three miles a day and there I was attempting to run five miles at the same pace that I usually run three miles in. However, even though that first run was hard, I felt such a great sense of accomplishment and every run from there on just kept getting easier. All of the runs the rest of that week were really great experiences but the most memorable moments from each one was running alongside other students and encouraging each other to do our best. There was always new people to meet, especially in the cafeteria, which is where most of my socializing happened. I got to meet people from all over the country and even the world. Everyone was extremely nice and had a unique life story to tell. At the end of the day, I would head back to my dorm, which I shared with two other students who I got to know a lot about during the time spent in the room. My personal favorite activity at camp, besides from running, was being able to play basketball in the pool because everyone was having a great time and on the walk back everyone who decided to go to the pool felt like they knew each other a little better. Attending Stanford Cross Country Camp was one of the best opportunities I’ve ever been given, and I won’t forget how much I enjoyed it.
Summer vacation is just a few days away, and I couldn't be more excited. I still find it hard to believe that I have been given the opportunity to spend a week at the college of my dreams. I have never been away from home by myself for this long, but I can already tell that I am going to enjoy this experience. I am really looking forward meeting new people who share a common interest. This program is bound to teach me so many new things, and I am extremely thankful for everyone who has made this possible.
