Masangay's Story

My passion is science and technology.

I have learned if one wants to discover their passion, one should look around them and make list of everything that they like or have pleasure doing. Due to this, I discovered that everything I listed was science related: I adore the natural beauty of earth, animals, and health. Moreover, through research, I have seen how everyday technological discovery is transforming the world for good. Therefore, my passion for science and technology is part of my daily life. At school, I have a good GPA in biology and chemistry, which has increased my desire to have a career as a biochemist.

Although I'm doing science in school, I have been told "do not limit your learning only to class room materials, explore education wherever you see it." Attending Brown Leadership Institute will give me the opportunity to become more knowledgeable about my career before going to college, which will keep me one step ahead of my competition.

A Note from Ms. Robins, Masangay's Teacher

"Masangay is a tremendous science student -- talented, engaged, curious, and hard-working. She finds the material fascinating, and is re-taking my chemistry course even though she already received chemistry credit from her school in Liberia. Not only did she want to solidify her understanding of the content, she wanted to learn the topic from a different perspective. She is unafraid to ask questions, test out ideas, make mistakes, and try again -- the mark of a true scientist -- and is never discouraged by challenging work or a difficult topic.

Despite her interest and experience, Masangay has never had access to the real, laboratory-based investigation that is critical for any science education. Masangay is very interested in pursuing a career in science, and would benefit tremendously from this opportunity to learn in a prestigious, rigorous program that offers real-world, hands-on experience in the field of her choice."

I had a great experience at Brown University this summer

I really appreciate you guys helping me attend this unique program, it was awesome and I met students from other countries around the world and made new friends. We learned a lot about leadership and global health issues.

During my two weeks stay at Brown, I learned more than what I expected. We underwent a variety of leadership trainings and learned the different kinds of deadly diseases in the word, their preventive measures, and causes and effects on the global community. Also, we learned and acted the various functions of the United Nation organizations (UNICEF, WHO, WFP etc.) and their current contributions to the Ebola outbreak in West Africa.

We participated in a Challenge Course in Bristol, Rhode Island, where our teachers utilized this approach to teach us more about leadership skills, group problem solving, and teamwork. Our professors were very knowledgeable of the course, friendly, and showed concern for us throughout our stay.

At the end of the program, they asked everyone to create an action plan that we will implement either in our schools or communities, and I created one to advocate for educative extra-curricular activities at Discovery High School. I believe these activities can contribute immensely to the development and college acceptance success of students. Once more if it were not for your donations, then I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to have such a wonderful experience at Brown. THANK YOU!

Can't wait for Brown

Thanks to everyone for supporting me, I really appreciate it. You were all so generous to provide me with the financial support I needed to attend my summer program and follow my dreams.

I'm really excited because I'm about to have the summer of a lifetime: attending Brown University's Leadership Program, meeting new people, and acquiring new experiences the will help me to develop and prepare for college. I also look forward to developing my leadership abilities, which will prepare me to make real change in the U.S. and back home in Liberia. I wouldn't have been able to attend this program without your support, and I will forever be grateful.
