My passion is leadership. Since I can remember, I have always wanted to make a change in the world, because being a leader means leaving a place or situation better than how I found it. Throughout my life, my experiences have reaffirmed for me that I am not afraid to do things that are out of my comfort zone. For example, I have talked to two assembly members about passing a bill that will help my community and other under-served communities access cleaner water. This experience along with others have helped me realize what it means to be a leader as well as why I want to be one. Being a leader suggests that you need to be empathic toward everyone, be responsible, and be able to think outside the box.
I have always been a leader; I just need more help to take my leadership to another level. I always try to make an impact in my community even if it's a small impact. By attending Outward Bound California, I will further develop my resilience, tenacity, and integrity. I will do this by getting out of my comfort zone, such as going camping, which is something I haven't done.
If there were a poster child for students who "redefine their future and pursue their passions," Evelyn would be it, hands down. As long as I have known Evelyn, she has had a passion for helping others, and that love has continued to evolve as she has been able to realize her real potential. I firmly believe that her growing desire and confidence have been a result of all of the fantastic things she has pursued outside of school. It is apparent from interacting with her, that she not only wants to continue to establish the foundation for a better future for herself but also for others. She is actively seeking opportunities that will allow her to do so. If there is a student in Los Angeles who truly deserves this chance, it is Evelyn, because I can assure you that whatever she gets from this experience, she will give it back to her community tenfold.
Best of luck Evelyn.
