Mateo's Story

My passion is community.

In my sophomore year, I took a war and peace class. Although I never liked history, I was really interested in what I learned. I learned about how the international community worked, and about the injustices that happen throughout the world in places like Iraq, Syria, Nigeria, Palestine, ect. I am now taking US history and am learning about the injustices that happen to the black community such as police brutality. I am also learning about influential leaders like MLK, Malcolm X, Huey Newton, and more. These leaders have really inspired me to make a change myself.

Attending Unlimited A+ will help me explore my passion because I will learn about leadership. Truthfully, I am shy and cannot speak in front of a large amount of people. However, I am willing to go out of my comfort zone to learn how to do that and how to get a crowd to agree with my ideas. My passion is to help others and improve communities, but I can't do that without effective leadership. This program would help me organize things like community service, which is something that I would also like to do in the future.
