My passion is math and science.
As a child, I was not a very strong reader and writer at all. I struggled with simple words such as "camera" as "can," but teachers took notice as to how science and math were my strengths. My second grade phonics teacher and science teacher teamed up to incorporate science and reading to help me, and soon I became an excellent reader--all because of science.
Because I'm a girl, most people do not expect math to be my favorite subject. I overcome this stereotype everyday, especially as one of the mere eleven girls that attend my accelerated Algebra II Honors class. But, this has only pushed me to try and excel even more.
The Summer at Brown program includes a variety of science and math courses that I can take, including medical science, introduction to finance, and even psychology. By taking these courses, I will expand my knowledge of my two greatest passions.
"More than any student I have taught before her, Cassandra's commitment, passion, and motivation are demonstrated every single day. She is a model of the saying, "excellence is a habit." She routinely was among the top scorers on quarter and final exams because of her habit of working her hardest every single day. Moreover, she never gave off the air that she was working hard for the grade. Rather, it was clear she was interested and was working hard to learn.
Cassandra is an exceptionally talented student who just wants a seat at the table. Attending Summer at Brown will help spur her development as a scientist and set her on the path to a science or math degree in college. This would be a personal boon to her and also a boon to women and minorities who are drastically underrepresented in these areas. Let's give her a chance to change that and change her life!"
My two week experience at Brown University was a wonderful, life-changing experience. The Bacteriology course was perfect for the career field I am interested in. Living on Brown’s campus was especially helpful. It felt like I was as an actual undergraduate. I took grand steps out of my comfort zone by starting conversations with strangers and even creating bonds with peers throughout my Residential House. Huge thanks to the Wishbone organization, the teachers who’ve helped with the application process, and donors for providing me with this wonderful experience at Brown.
I am so excited be participating in the Summer@Brown program in the upcoming weeks. I'm eager to take a step out of my comfort zone by meeting new people and trying new things. Thank you for the donations and support!
I'm so happy that you've found something that you get excited about! I hope you reach the goal!
