My passion is coding.
Coding was a new topic for me until 2014 when my cousin suggested trying codecademy.com. I was eager to try this website out since I was interested in technology. I started learning a few basic steps and I became fascinated by the somewhat ease of this concept. The year after, I decided to apply to summer programs based on coding. I got accepted into one and started learning about the many things coding can serve in. In this summer program, I learned the importance and the impact coding has in the world. There are many things you can create with coding, from games to apps that help find the nearest police station, to software that is used by nurses. There is a lot of power in coding which is a way to show your voice by using creativity and it has become a newfound passion.
I think that Flor would benefit immensely from the Cal Poly EPIC Engineering Camp because she would not only be able to learn more about this topic, but would also get a chance to push herself outside of her comfort zone. Flor would benefit from meeting other students who have similar interests, and help her grow her confidence.
The week I spent at Cal Poly was truly one of the best experiences I've had. I met people from all over California and even from out of state. Being surrounded by people from different backgrounds and interested in engineering was eye opening and made me hopeful for my college career.
I learned so many things about aerospace and materials engineering, and myself throughout the duration of this program. Being in a group that didn't focus on my passion (coding) made me realize that although I really like computer programming, I am better and interested more in building things. EPIC made me realize that computer engineering is right for me because it combines programming and building technological devices.
Overall, I truly enjoyed EPIC and had fun throughout the week. My group and I got so close and I made new friends that have similar mindsets as I do. My favorite part of the program was getting to build a boat out of cardboard, tape, and a plastic bag. We raced on the second to last day of the program against other teams and my group ended up winning!
This experience wouldn't have been possible without the help of Ms. Lin and my donors. Again, thank you so much for the opportunity.
Thank you to everyone who was kind enough to donate, especially my advocate. I am so excited to attend this program in the summer and occupy my time doing things I'm genuinely interested in. I will get an in depth view of engineering by meeting fellow Cal Poly students, professors, doing hands-on work, and spending my time with other students that are interested in the same things as I am. This program will allow me to learn more about my interests and assure me that this is what I want to do once I get into college (and beyond).
This wouldn't have been possible if it wasn't for my donors! Thank you again!
All the best ! Glad I could help.
Go Flor! This is such a great opportunity, and I can't wait to see what you get out of it!
Flor is such an incredible young lady and I am so proud of her for taking advantage of this opportunity!
So excited to see you so passionate about engineering! Can't wait to hear about the program :)
