My passion is helping others.
Since I was a child, it has always been my instinct to help others, from assisting someone down the stairs to helping classmates when they are struggling to understand the material in school. Currently, I am mentoring ninth grade students who are having difficulty in math during and after school. So far, I have helped the girls improve not only academically but socially as well. It has been a great experience seeing their attitude and focus shift from disruptive to cooperative in the classroom.
This passion has inspired my future goal, which is to become a physical therapist. There are so many patients who are in need of physical therapy, such as those who have been involved in a tragic accident and need extra guidance to recover. I would love to help them cross that bridge and make possible what they believed was impossible.
The Three-Week Summer College Program at Ithaca College includes a class in physical therapy, which would not only help me pursue my career but would help me succeed in my passion of helping others.
"Melanie is exceptionally mature, compassionate, and hard-working. She would be a great candidate for the summer program at Ithaca College. She is vibrant, enthusiastic, and full of positive energy, which positively impacts others who come into contact with her. She would benefit immensely from the program as well. East Harlem does not have an abundance of productive summer programs for teens. Melanie is a wonderful person with so much potential. This program would mean the world to her."
This past summer I attended the Three Week Summer College Program at Ithaca College. I took the Health Sciences: Foundations and Careers course. The class was about 2-3 hours long everyday and we got to on field trips to different clinics, met people who specialize in specific areas of public health, met the mayor of Ithaca and even visited the hospital. It was very interesting to learn about all the fields of the public health and how many issues there are regarding the same issue.
Everyday, the directors would do activities after dinner or after classes to help us engage in the program more and get to know our peers a little more individually. For instance, we would play name games, have karaoke night, lip sync battles and campfires. I had the best time! After the first week of the program, I had already found myself an amazing group of friends. We all had similar backgrounds but lived nowhere one another so it was pretty cool to meet them. We all got very close to one another in such a small period of time, so it was really good to have a group of people there that I could relate to. I also met a few of Ithaca’s college students. They were very sweet and were always willing to give us advice on anything we needed. I have to say that this was one of the best trips of my life. I really enjoyed experiencing the college life and meeting people from all over the world. It was truly heartbreaking when I had to leave. I just hope my actual college experience can live up to the Ithaca Summer College program. Thank you so much Wishbone for this amazing opportunity!
